As a Senior Materials Testing Laboratory Technician, you will be responsible for performing a wide range of materials testing on soils, aggregates, concrete, and other construction materials. You will also provide technical support to junior technicians, help manage the day-to-day operations of the lab, and ensure that testing procedures are carried out accurately, safely, and in compliance with industry standards. Key Responsibilities : Conduct a variety of materials tests, including but not limited to compaction, grading, moisture content, and strength testing on soils, aggregates, and concrete, following the relevant standards (e.g., BS, EN, ASTM). Assist in the preparation and analysis of test samples, ensuring all materials are handled and stored appropriately. Provide technical guidance and support to junior technicians, assisting with their training and development. Ensure that laboratory equipment is properly maintained, calibrated, and ready for use. Interpret test results, prepare reports, and present findings to senior management or clients as required. Monitor and uphold laboratory safety standards, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations. Manage the recording, storage, and archiving of test data and results, ensuring they are accurate and easily accessible for future reference. Assist in the management of laboratory supplies and equipment, ensuring adequate stock levels and timely ordering of consumables. Liaise with project managers, engineers, and clients to ensure the laboratory’s services meet their needs and requirements. Participate in quality assurance activities, ensuring that all testing processes comply with the relevant standards and accreditations. Help identify opportunities for process improvements within the laboratory to enhance efficiency and quality. Skills and Qualifications : A relevant qualification in materials science, civil engineering, or a related field (e.g., HND, BTEC, or equivalent). Proven experience (2 years) in a materials testing laboratory, with a strong knowledge of testing methods for soils, aggregates, concrete, and related materials. Familiarity with testing standards (e.g., BS EN, ASTM, ISO) and the ability to carry out tests in compliance with these standards. Good understanding of laboratory equipment and the ability to troubleshoot basic issues. Strong attention to detail, ensuring accuracy in test results and reporting. Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritise effectively. A proactive approach to safety and a thorough understanding of health and safety protocols in the laboratory environment. Good communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to prepare clear and concise test reports. Ability to work independently and as part of a team, providing leadership and support to less experienced technicians. Desirable Attributes : Experience with laboratory accreditation processes, such as ISO 17025. Knowledge of geotechnical testing or environmental testing methods. Ability to operate laboratory management software or other data recording tools.
