We are seeking a Senior Engineer to play a key role in supporting the Team Leader with technical approvals, providing pre-planning advice on highway structures, and conducting comprehensive structural reviews. This role requires a proactive and collaborative professional who can work effectively across teams, demonstrating a strong technical background and the ability to operate independently. Excellent communication skills and a keen responsiveness to client needs are essential for success in this position. The Role To provide timely and accurate advice to internal teams, County Councillors, District Members, Parish Councils, Developers and the general public on all structures-related matters as required To ensure the team’s performance in providing speedy and courteous responses to technical approval submissions, structures queries and complaints is in accordance with relevant targets and standards. To provide assistance to the Team Leader in relation to all aspects covered within the team To carry out technical approvals and the preparation of relevant reports. To carry out/review CS451s and CS470s Support Health and Safety, Environmental Management System, Quality Management System and Construction Design Management in a positive and constructive manner, with the aim of minimising work-related injuries by implementing Essex Highways policies and procedures. Understands the overall functions, aims and directions of Essex Highways, and how the structures service fits into those objectives and is able to translate this for team members and ensure they also understand how their objectives fit into the wider organisation. To provide clear and effective leadership to junior members of the team. To carry out site visits as required About You An appropriate Degree and experience of application in structures. (Essential) Membership of, or working towards, a relevant Professional Institution (ICE, IStructE) with evidence of continual professional development. (Essential) Good knowledge and evidence of the application of Highway Legislation, relevant structures design procedures and software, technical approval processes, standards and good practice (Essential). In a local authority environment (Desirable). Experience of dealing with members of the public, consultants & developers; able to build and maintain effective working relationships with key people both internally and externally. (Essential) Knowledge and experience of budgetary governance, management and control measures (Desirable) To have knowledge of the inspection of site works to confirm compliance in accordance with the approved design and specifications.
