Job Summary:
We are seeking a skilled and experienced Oil Mechanic specializing in the maintenance, servicing, and repair of high-voltage (HV) and extra-high-voltage (EHV) transformers, circuit breakers, and oil-insulated equipment up to 400kV. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in handling oil filtration, oil replacement, testing, and fault diagnosis to ensure the reliability and efficiency of electrical transmission systems.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Transformer & Switchgear Oil Maintenance:
Conduct oil filtration, degassing, and dehydration of transformers and switchgear up to 400kV.
Perform oil sampling and analysis to assess dielectric strength, moisture content, and contamination levels.
Drain, refill, and circulate insulating oils to maintain optimal equipment performance.
Replace and maintain bushings, gaskets, seals, and radiators on oil-filled transformers.
2. Testing & Fault Diagnosis:
Conduct DGA (Dissolved Gas Analysis) and interpret oil test results to detect potential transformer faults.
Perform pressure testing, insulation resistance testing, and breakdown voltage tests on oil-filled equipment.
Identify leaks, overheating issues, and insulation breakdowns, implementing corrective measures.
Maintain detailed inspection reports and test records for compliance and future reference.
3. Equipment Installation & Overhaul:
Assist in the installation, commissioning, and retrofitting of oil-filled power transformers and reactors.
Carry out preventative maintenance and emergency repairs on oil-insulated circuit breakers, tap changers, and bushing assemblies.
Ensure flushing and refilling of transformer oil during major maintenance or refurbishment activities.
Support the vacuum filling process to remove moisture and ensure proper insulation levels.
4. Safety & Compliance:
Adhere to National Grid, DNO, and manufacturer standards for oil handling and maintenance.
Ensure compliance with HSE regulations, COSHH, and environmental standards for oil disposal and handling.
Conduct risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) before performing maintenance activities.
Follow lockout-tagout (LOTO) procedures and high-voltage safety protocols to prevent electrical hazards.
5. Collaboration & Documentation:
Work closely with substation engineers, electrical technicians, and HV specialists to ensure efficient maintenance operations.
Maintain accurate logs, inspection reports, and oil quality documentation for regulatory compliance.
Train and mentor junior oil mechanics and apprentices in best practices.
Qualifications & Skills Required:
Essential:
1. CSCS or EUSR (Energy & Utility Skills Register) Card
2. Oil Handling & Filtration Certification
3. Experience working with transformers, switchgear, and oil-filled equipment up to 400kV
4. Knowledge of insulating oil properties, contamination risks, and filtration techniques
5. Strong understanding of electrical safety procedures and high-voltage maintenance practices
6. Proficiency in using oil testing equipment (DGA, dielectric strength tester, moisture analyzers, etc.)
Desirable:
1. National Grid Competent Person (NG Persons) Certification
2. Confined Space Training
3. Manual Handling & Fire Safety Certification
4. First Aid at Work Certification
5. Experience with SF6 Gas Handling & Testing
