Role Summary
Emergency Eye Service Practitioner (Full-time and Part-time positions available)
Applications are invited from suitably experienced and enthusiastic professionals to join our multidisciplinary team within the Emergency Eye Service (EES). Our team includes nurses, optometrists (including newly qualified), and paramedics, working together to deliver high-quality, patient-centred urgent eye care.
There are excellent development opportunities, including involvement in education, quality improvement initiatives, and extended roles across subspecialty clinics once established in EES.
We are committed to building a forward-thinking, multidisciplinary team. The post holder will work closely with the Heads of Service to maintain high standards of care and contribute to service development.
Applicants must demonstrate competency in anterior slit lamp examination. We will consider trainee practitioners with a willingness to develop these skills if no suitably qualified candidates apply.
We welcome applications from both full-time and part-time candidates; full-time is preferred. The role involves a flexible rota with no fixed working days, so adaptability is essential.

Our EES provides treatment for emergency and urgent, sight-threatening problems. The successful candidate will assess, diagnose, and treat these patients independently and alongside the Ophthalmologist. The role also involves managing the telephone triage service for queries from primary eye care providers, post-operative patients, and emergency services.
The post holder should be skilled in anterior eye examination and ophthalmic test interpretation. They may also supply and administer medications under Patient Group Directions, following Trust policies and national guidelines.
The role includes facilitating placements and teaching for healthcare professionals, including student and pre-reg Optometrists, Nurse Practitioners, IP Optometrists, and medical students.
The post holder is accountable for their professional actions within their scope of practice.
Working Pattern:
We have up to three vacancies for full-time and part-time practitioners, with a minimum hours per week. Full-time availability is preferred, especially for trainees. The role involves working across four days per week with no fixed schedule, requiring flexibility. The EES operates Monday to Saturday, including Bank Holidays, with Sunday openings expected soon. Staff typically work about 1 in 4 Saturdays.
