Gynae Emergency and Fertility Nurse Specialist
An exciting opportunity has arisen within our Gynaecology department for a Gynae Emergency/Fertility nurse specialist role.
This role is 15 hours working in our Fertility Clinic and 22.5 hours in our Gynae Emergency Clinic.
This is a band 6 role progressing onto a band 7 role once competencies have been met and budget approved.
The post holder is required to provide high quality, individualised care and advice to all patients accessing the services. The post holder will provide a holistic approach to Fertility and Emergency Gynaecological investigations, treatment and early pregnancy through compassionate, evidence based practice.
Main duties of the job

The post holder will have the responsibility for the daily co-ordination of the Gynaecology Emergency Assessment Clinic and Fertility Unit at Northampton General Hospital.
The post holder will work as part of a multidisciplinary team supporting all members of the team ensuring that care is delivered in line with current NICE Guidelines and local Trust protocols and appropriate imaging, reporting and management of patients is provided. They will promote nurse led care in partnership with other health professionals
The post holder is required to provide high quality, individualised care and advice to all clients accessing the services. The post holder will provide a holistic approach to Fertility and Emergency Gynaecological investigations, treatment and early pregnancy through compassionate, evidence based practice.
The post holder will practice autonomously from the findings of investigations and ultrasound scans to plan appropriate care and treat accordingly.
The post holder will be responsible for the development of both their role and other members of the team roles in order to both improve the service and maintain current service levels and practice according to the Nursing and Midwifery code of conduct.

1. ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Supporting Clinical Excellence
- Be a clinical expert in diagnosis, treatment and care with excellent assessment and interpersonal skills.
- Take responsibility to ensure a high standard of clinical care and patient welfare whilst in the clinic supporting junior staff to do likewise.
- Act autonomously and have the skills to support in the development of protocols and care pathways.
- Assess, implement and evaluate individualised strategies to manage the physical, psychological and emotional needs of patients attending the clinic.
- Assess capacity, gain valid consent and have the ability to work within the legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment.
- Carry out comprehensive patient assessments demonstrating skills while working independently, on a wide range of patients of varied age, level of ability, communication barriers, ethnic backgrounds and social status.
- Communicate highly sensitive information, especially where barriers to understanding/acceptance need to be overcome (breaking bad news).
- To coordinate and prioritise day to day working practices within the service.
- Actively strive towards improving the patient experience within the departments, acting as an advocate for the patients attending the clinics.
- Act as a professional role model for nursing and as a clinical expert within the department in both a practical and advisory/educational role.
- Undertake patient teaching sessions including the support of patients throughout the Fertility pathway (Injection Training).
- Utilise specialist skills in order to provide care including assessing of patient/couple at initial consultation and planning of appropriate diagnostic testing and on-going treatment.
- Provide counselling support and signpost patients to counselling services as required.
- To ensure that couples/individuals accessing the services are provided with full information about appropriate choices and management options.
- Using specialist knowledge assess, plan, implement and evaluate the needs of women and their partners on an on-going basis, coordinating the care given by all members of the multi-disciplinary team and other appropriate departments.
- To ensure that accurate clinical records are maintained reflecting both changes in the individuals condition and any treatment delivered, in accordance with NMC and Trust policy.
- Have a thorough understanding of current ICB referral criteria for patients requiring NHS assisted conception treatment.
Professional Responsibilities
- Maintain own continuing professional development and career pathway by attending appropriate courses, study days and conferences to develop, implement and maintain high clinical standards within the services.
- Promote collaborative working partnerships and effective communication between all members of the multi-disciplinary team.
- Work collaboratively and in partnership with practitioners from other disciplines and across organisational, professional and academic boundaries.
- To undertake internal and external training where required and utilise these skills in the teaching of others.
- Support nurses within the service by teaching and providing advice on all aspects of Fertility and Emergency Gynaecology care.
- Act as a trainer/teacher for Nurses, Midwives, Junior Doctors and GPs.
- Act as a professional role model and gain expert knowledge for on-going development in Fertility care and Emergency Gynaecology, in both a practical and advisory/educational role. Demonstrate a high standard of practice and knowledge.
- Act as a mentor/preceptor to learners, nursing/midwifery students and health care assistants.
- Actively participate in clinical governance, providing expert input when required.
- Participate in staff appraisal scheme and ensure NMC revalidation.
Policy and Service Development Responsibilities
- Lead in the promotion of evidence-based practice, reviewing the evidence for clinical practice within the specialist fields.
- Participate in the development of protocols, pathways and guidelines.
- Participate in meeting within the directorate or Trust when required and related to Fertility Service and Emergency Gynaecology Provision.
- Be proactive in participating and chaperoning ultrasound scans for both the fertility and emergency gynaecological service to ensure future service development.
- Ensure effective use of resources and safe methods of practice including having shared responsibility for safe use and maintenance of highly specialised and expensive ultrasound equipment.
- Demonstrate budgetary awareness in the planning and implementation of clinical practice.
Quality Assurance and Monitoring
- Possess knowledge of the audit process and method of critically appraising research.
- Involvement in clinical audit and evaluation of practice within the clinical area.
- Contribute ideas and undertake monitoring with regards to quality of patient centred care.
- Participate in research relating to Fertility and Emergency Gynaecology Services.
- Input information and have a working knowledge of the Hospital Information systems.
- Attend training and updates on implementation and management of Fertility and the Emergency Gynaecology Service.
- Ensure proficiency in computerised methods of patient documentation and image recording.

* Demonstrates an understanding of national and local strategies and policies pertaining to the services
* Demonstrates knowledge of current NICE Guidelines pertaining to Fertility and early pregnancy treatment.
* Experience of working within a nurse led service with an ability to independently provide relevant advice/treatment.
* Demonstrates an understanding of professional and personal accountability in line with current standards set out in the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.
* Experience of managing a service and clinic independently
Skills & Abilities
* Have Gynaecology/Early pregnancy scanning experience and qualification
* Able to independently plan, assist and evaluate the patients care pathway.
* Manage nurse led clinical sessions and own time effectively.
* Ability to communicate effectively using appropriate oral, written and listening skills
* Ability to work independently and to demonstrate the ability to make autonomous decisions.
