In this role as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist within RCI, you will be working as part of a clinical team, including doctors, nurses, and other health care professionals. The role you perform will directly contribute to saving and improving patients' lives. There are many opportunities for career advancement. With experience and training, you may progress to managing a section of the laboratory, right through to being a consultant lead with responsibility for the entire laboratory service. You may use your knowledge to specialise in an area vital to the operation of a modern diagnostic service such as Quality Control, training and education, or research and development. We will provide you with an extensive induction and training programme and ongoing development to support you in your role and achieving your career ambitions.
Main duties of the job
You will be required to perform, analyse, record, and interpret a wide range of laboratory investigations and technical procedures relating to the issue of patient test results for blood transfusion and the issue of blood and products, with the support of the team. You will be responsible for the support and training of new and less experienced staff. You will be required to handle blood and tissue samples and operate a range of laboratory analysers and equipment. With appropriate training and experience, you will be required to participate in an on-call rota and to provide cover in times of operational difficulty with notice.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered Biomedical Scientist
* Science graduate with relevant post-graduate training e.g. British Blood Transfusion Society specialist certificate, British Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Diploma or equivalent experience
* Evidence of continuous learning and professional development
Experience
* Broad science knowledge with a specialist knowledge in transfusion/transplantation science gained through previous experience working as a Biomedical Scientist
* Experience in specialised laboratory techniques using a wide range of complex equipment
* Experience in prioritising and issuing work to other staff and monitoring progress to ensure deadlines are met
* Good understanding of Clinical Pathology Accreditation (CPA), Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), UK Blood Transfusion Service (UKBTS), and British Committee for Standards in Haematology (BCSH) guidelines.
* Evidence of training and mentoring staff.
