The School of Sport, Rehabilitation and Exercise Sciences is seeking to appoint a number of Assistant Lecturers.
Purpose of the Role
Assistant Lecturers support academic staff at the University by performing teaching or teaching-related duties in line with business need and affordability. This post also provides a development opportunity for postgraduate students to develop their teaching skills in preparation for more senior teaching posts in future and to achieve professional recognition.
Teaching should normally be undergraduate class teaching/seminars or demonstrating, using existing teaching materials. Lecturing duties, and any delivery of teaching at Masters level, would not usually be undertaken by Assistant Lecturers and must be associated with a student's research interest, requiring prior approval from the Deputy Dean (Education) of the relevant Faculty. Lecturing duties should be directed by and under the supervision of the module supervisor. Marking should be undertaken in line with the guidelines and with permission from the Deputy Dean (Education), based on a case made by the Head of Department.
Assistant Lecturers will receive close supervision and direction from the module supervisor, including regular feedback, pastoral support, and guidance. The module supervisor will provide full background on the module and clear direction on the content to be taught and the preparation necessary, and will undertake assessment of teaching.
Main Duties
The main duties of the post will include:
* Teaching classes to students, providing them with a thorough knowledge of the subject and enabling them to meet the learning outcomes.
* Preparation time – lesson planning, reading around the subject, etc.
* Holding office hours related to the courses taught and undertaking student liaison (e.g. responding to emails).
* Additional time for office hours to provide feedback to students to support their learning.
* Marking coursework assignments, including use of FASER.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants for posts as Assistant Lecturers should be in their second or third year of study in 2023-2024 and be registered for a postgraduate research degree at the University of Essex during all or part of the academic year 2023-2024. First-year students with relevant teaching experience will be considered.
Applicants should have a good knowledge of the requirements of the subject area of the module taught and an undergraduate degree in a relevant subject area. Successful completion and achievement of descriptor 1 of the UK Professional Standards Framework by the end of the second term of teaching (CADENZA) is also required.
Assistant Lecturers who have previously taught within the School should hold CADENZA accreditation to be considered.
Contractual Arrangements
The total number of hours per week is determined by the number of classes undertaken by each Assistant Lecturer. The appointment will be made at the University rates for Assistant Lecturers, depending on hours agreed, at Grade 7 SP 27 (currently £18.09 per hour).
The posts will be offered as fixed-term employment contracts until the post holder completes or withdraws from postgraduate studies or enters further completion or an extension to the completion period. Although an overarching contract will be in place for the duration of postgraduate studies, Assistant Lecturers will need to apply for individual posts and will have no entitlement to future engagements beyond their initial post.
Support, Mentoring and Monitoring
Assistant Lecturers must engage in professional development activity related to teaching, learning, and assessment responsibilities. All Assistant Lecturers are expected to achieve Associate Fellowship of the HEA (CADENZA) at the first possible opportunity and by the end of their first year of teaching (or they will not normally be able to continue teaching as an Assistant Lecturer). Assistant Lecturers will be paid for all mandatory training. The following training should be undertaken:
* Attendance at the central induction event (September and/or January) (12 hours)
* Mandatory online training (3 hours)
* Complete the CADENZA application (6 hours).
In addition, there will be induction and training within the School. Assistant Lecturers are also expected to play a wider citizenship role in the School, including involvement in module development and review and representation at Departmental meetings and events.
How to Apply
Please send the completed application form by 5pm on Friday 29 September 2023. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by the Head of Department or their nominee, usually the Assistant Lecturer Coordinator, and at least one other member of teaching staff. Candidates invited to interview will be provided with feedback on their interview performance and suitability for the role of Associate Lecturer upon request.
