South West London Pathology (SWLP) is a pathology partnership between 4 leading hospital trusts - St George's University Hospitals NHS Trust, Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Croydon Health Services NHS Trust and Epsom & St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust - designed to provide an integrated, high quality pathology service for hospitals and GP's across South West London, by bringing together the best of each Trust's services and providing them within a single organisation.
An exciting opportunity exists for a full time HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist wishing to work within the multidisciplinary Clinical Blood Sciences laboratory at Epsom and St Helier hospitals, under SWLP. Applications are invited from suitably qualified and motivated State Registered Biomedical Scientists to join the well-established team in this busy UKAS Accredited pathology department.
Biomedical scientists within the Haematology and Blood Transfusion section work on Immucor BT analysers, Sysmex CN and XN analysers. The Alinity analysers are used in Biochemistry automation, in addition to other specialist analysers including the Waters TQD, Sebia Capillary electrophoresis and Agilent HPLC.
The post is for 37.5 hours per week, primarily based at St Helier Hospital; however rotation across other sites within SWLP may be required. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the 24 hour/seven day service after a period of suitable training.
Main duties of the job
We are currently seeking to recruit a suitably qualified Band 5 BMS to join Blood Sciences to work primarily in the Newborn Screening Department, supporting the provision of the routine screening assays and the Severe Combined Immunodeficiency in-service evaluation. Once the evaluation is concluded the post holder will be expected to form part of the routine pool of Blood sciences BMS working on a rotational basis. We are looking for an enthusiastic, dedicated, hard-working individual able to demonstrate a flexible approach to work.
The post offers the opportunity for multidisciplinary training in Blood Sciences. Beginning in Newborn Screening and then to include training in haematology, coagulation, blood transfusion and biochemistry. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the 24 hour/ seven day service after a period of suitable training.

A new state of the art Automation laboratory has been installed at St Helier hospital providing Abbott Alinity Chemistry and Immunoassay analysers connected to the latest GLP systems. The coagulation section has also recently received an equipment upgrade, along with the Haemoglobinopathy section. It is an exciting time to join us, with many opportunities available to advance your knowledge of cutting edge technology.
Additionally, St Helier hospital has a number of specialist sections, including HPLC for Biogenic amines, Specialist TDM analysis and Amino Acids, Specialist coagulation testing. We are also home to the South West Thames regional Newborn Screening Laboratory utilising Tandem Mass Spectroscopy, Immunoassay, Sebia capillary technology and more recently PCR, to provide population screening to the newborns in the South West Thames catchment area.
