Would you like to work for a multi-award-winning practice with an amazing team in beautiful rural Lancashire? All About Us We are looking for a vet to join our Farm Animal and Equine Team here at Stanley House. While you'll work in both disciplines, we understand that you may have a bias for one area, and we're happy to support your interests. Our caseload is a great mix of family run dairy, pedigree beef and sheep, smallholders, and sports and leisure equine practice. We're committed to your professional growth, and as part of our team, you'll have opportunities to learn, develop your skills, and advance your career. As a practice, we love what we do and pride ourselves on our excellent patient care and high-quality service to our patients and clients. Our ethos is very simple - we want people to be happy at work, so if we can improve one of the team's lives and make it work, we do it. Most importantly, there is so much respect between the team, and everyone looks out for one another. That’s probably why so many of our colleagues have been with us for a long time, and we have a very low staff turnover; David, our Farm and Equine Clinical Director, has been with us for 30 years We are also very lucky to have Sarah, our large animal branch coordinator, who checks in on us all and ensures we’ve all taken a proper break and are OK. Our farm and equine department has a rich history, dating back to 1911 when the vets would visit the farms on horseback. This continued after the First World War, with the vets progressing to motorbikes. Today, we are an award-winning, multi-site practice. Our farm and equine department is situated in a stunning barn conversion in a beautiful rural setting in Higham, and our main small animal clinic is in Colne, with branch surgeries in Burnley and Barnoldswick (consult only). We were very honoured to have won the Pendle Employer of the Year in 2016 and runner-up in 2018 (the awards have not taken place since). We are so very proud of this award because it was all about what our team said about us. We have also been highly commended twice in the SPVS (The Society for Practising Veterinary Surgeons) Wellbeing Awards. There is lots of experience within our team of 6 farm & equine and 15 small animal vets, and someone is always on hand to discuss a tricky case or offer advice and support. We have an advanced veterinary practitioner and certificate holders in surgery, medicine, pharmacology, and dentistry, and one of our vets is currently undertaking a master’s in animal behaviour. We also welcomed two experienced equine vets, Christine and Hannah, in early 2024 and are in the process of training our very first REVN. What our team say about working at Stanley House. ‘We all keep busy at Stanley House, but what a fantastic company to work for. People are always on hand to help, senior staff are always up for discussing cases, and I cannot believe how understanding and flexible the team have been when needing time off for personal reasons. The clients are super friendly and make the job fun. Vet life can be stressful but the staff and clients make sure you're always supported, even when things don't go to plan. Thanks to all the Stanley House staff for working with me and making me a better vet every day.’ Catherine, MRCVS ‘’I joined Stanley House as a new graduate vet shortly after finishing university. The team has made me feel so welcome since I’ve been here. I couldn’t have asked for a more supportive environment. There are always plenty of vets available to speak to with a lot of experience in different aspects of veterinary. ’’ Ben MRCVS ‘’Having started as a new graduate and progressing year on year from being a team leader through to Clinical Director, I can't imagine working anywhere else. I know I can call on colleagues for support and advice, and I would trust any of my peers with the care of my own animal. I'm proud to recommend the practice to new potential clients because I know they will receive excellent care. There's a range of experience, knowledge, and skills within the team and opportunity to develop personal areas of interest.’’ Yana MCRVS Clinical Director Our facilities Our large animal vets work out of our fabulous, purpose-built barn conversion, set in the beautiful Lancashire countryside with views of the rolling hills surrounding the practice. We put a lot of thought into the on-site facilities, including our large animal theatre and stables. We’re also in the process of setting up an arena for lameness workups. We’re constantly investing in high-quality portable diagnostic equipment like our mobile CR x-ray machine, battery-powered ultrasound scanners, modern video endoscopes and diagnostic equipment so that as many procedures as possible can be carried out off-site. Rota It is very important to us that our team are happy at work and enjoy a good work-life balance, and with their help, we have worked to develop the best rota possible and are continuously working to improve it. Our vets finish at 5.30 pm, and the first on-call rota is just 1 in 5, with a half-day after your night on call and the Friday afternoon off following the weekend worked. Out of the 5 weekends in the rolling rota, you have 3 totally undisturbed weekends, and you can plan your life well in advance. There is always backup available when needed, with a 1 in 5 second on-call. New Graduate support Our VetGDP Advisor and Clinical Director, David, joined us as a recent graduate in 1993 and is ready and waiting to help less experienced vets build their confidence as they start their veterinary journey. We also offer a new graduate development programme, which includes the opportunity to spend 2 weeks working abroad at a neutering clinic. Ben recently headed off to a neuter clinic in Thailand, and we couldn’t send him all that way without the opportunity to see the sights, so we tagged 2 weeks' holiday to the end of his stay so he could travel. We have also partnered with UCLan to help train veterinary students in both the large and small animal teams. What we get up to outside of work We love getting together outside of work, whether it’s for our summer BBQ, getting competitive at the local pub quiz or dinner and dancing at our Christmas party. We always have fun and make memories to keep us laughing all year round. Every year, we take part in the Trawden agricultural show, and we love raising money for good causes. We regularly take part in charity events; we have completed both the Lancashire and Yorkshire 3 peaks, a guide dogs challenge, and we also take part in the annual Pendle pub crawl – a 13-mile walk with 13 pubs for refreshments along the way What’s it like around here? If you are not from the area, Pendle is a lovely part of the country in the Northwest of England, nestling between the Ribble Valley and the Pennine Way. The Forest of Bowland, an area of outstanding natural beauty, is on our doorstep, and the Yorkshire Dales, Lake District, and Bronte Country are all within easy reach. We have two golf courses in Pendle and a sailing club on Burwains reservoir. The area is fantastic for cycling, walking, and running, and for footie fans, we have the infamous Burnley football team – we just won’t mention their Premier League standing For people who enjoy the City life, we are also within easy reach of Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds, which all offer excellent shopping and nightlife.
