We are seeking a Principal Technician to join the team at the Department of Engineering's Aerodynamics and Acoustic Laboratories. The Aerodynamics and Acoustic Laboratories are part of the Fluids Group within Division A and have four technical staff who support research and teaching in all aspects of aerodynamics. Typically, the Laboratory supports 5-10 graduate students and 5-10 final-year MEng project students as well as the majority of Part II undergraduate coursework activities in the fluids subject area (typically 80-100 undergraduates per annum).
The technical staff provide a design and build service available to all teaching and research activities in the two laboratories:
* Aerodynamic - The type of work undertaken ranges from design and manufacture of experimental apparatus and equipment to assisting with undergraduate teaching labs.
* Acoustics - The type of work undertaken ranges from the investigation of the interaction of sound with unsteady flow and combustion to active and passive means of reducing noise.
The main responsibilities of the post will include providing highly specialist technical support to research and/or teaching staff and also providing advice and guiding students on research techniques. You will be required to support experiments conducted by researchers and academics. You will also maintain and operate research and/or teaching equipment/apparatus.
You should demonstrate advanced knowledge of lab technician work involving a critical understanding of relevant theory and/or principles. Practical experience of specialised laboratory activity and equipment is essential as well as experience in providing training to groups and on a one-to-one basis. Experience with electronics and electrical systems is highly desirable.
Applicants should have a level standard of education/level 6 vocational qualification or an equivalent level of practical experience. You should have excellent communication and organisational skills as well as good IT skills and a high degree of precision and accuracy. Previous supervisory/line management experience would be an advantage.
