Duties
The first level of managerial responsibility, in consultation with their Director/Technical Director for teams/offices engaged in design engineering work, often with additional administrative responsibility for design in branches of engineering other than their own. Alternatively, works as a specialist in a technical field.
Responsible for leading design programmes typically involving: budgetary control of projects; conceptual engineering; co-ordination of a number of projects; supervising preparation of and evaluating completed designs, layouts, specifications, cost estimates, contract documents, reports, proposals and supporting information to ensure conformity with prescribed functional and performance requirements or specifications; may conduct own detailed design work or give advice on a consultancy basis.
Liaise with Architects, Quantity Surveyors, Clients, other professionals, Consultants, Construction Engineers, Manufacturers, Suppliers, Contractors or Installers to ensure correct design and successful implementation of design projects. Has responsibility for on-site advice or supervision during construction or installation phase of projects.
Works to agreed financial budgets and programmes, planning of current design projects and participates in long-range planning of future design work. Originality and ingenuity are required both for devising practical and economic solutions to problems and for initiating original work by design staff which may lead to technical or management advice being offered across QODA.
Maintain working level contacts both inside and outside the firm to generate new business opportunities and secure workload. Liaise with senior colleagues on a regular basis and through attendance at Group co-ordination meetings.

3. Deliver aspects of the Business Plan as directed by their Technical Director/Director which may include contributing to the following:
* Budget management
* Technical quality and regular reviews
* Staff welfare and development
* Dealing with problems
* Brand awareness/marketing
* Managing and acting on Client feedback
1. Co-ordinate a technical development, market initiative or support function across the group with responsibility to their Technical Director/Director.
2. Maintain the highest levels of quality.
3. Display QODA behaviours and values and encourage others at all times.
Decisions and Recommendations
Decides on:
* The effective implementation of design programmes; project budgets; site suitability or project feasibilities; performance or functional requirements of work or equipment to be designed; optimum design methods and conceptual engineering; work programmes and time schedules; priorities and delegation of work; solution of complex technical problems; choice of suppliers and contractors as appropriate; evaluation of designs, reports, proposals, and supporting calculations and specifications.
* Support and coordinate the work of their team within the overall group on behalf of their Technical Director/Director.
* Review policy and financial controls in liaison with their Technical Director/Director.
Supervision Received
Design projects are assigned in terms of objectives or performance requirements which are subject to approval at the outset. Guidance on policy or complex design problems is available. Receives general support/mentoring from their Technical Director/Director and the group as required, to achieve the agreed objectives.
Leadership, Authority and Supervision Exercised
Manage a team. Reviews, evaluates and coordinates the work of all staff. Gives guidance on policy, complex technical and contractual problems and participates in the group management meetings.
Business Development
Consistently liaises with Clients and other industry professionals in a professional and appropriate manner such as to generate good working relationships and a high level of Client satisfaction. Maintain excellent client and design team relationships through proactive communication to achieve high levels of satisfaction and repeat business. Identify and pursue new business opportunities where appropriate with existing and new clients. Develop business relationships to secure additional work and increase development team revenue and deliver revenue targets for the development team.
