Welcome part of our society.
We are currently looking for a talented and motivated Principal Highways Engineer to join our team in Glasgow. This role can be worked flexibly, with a minimum of 3 days per week in the office and the option of adjusted start and finish times.
At Sweco, we draw upon a combined knowledge base of 22,000 experts across Northern Europe.
Our highway engineering teams are recognised industry leaders and operate across several markets including strategic roads, local roads, and private developments. Our current portfolio of projects includes trunk road and motorway schemes, local authority road network improvements, active travel and public realm projects across Scotland and beyond. Some of our recent projects include: The Queensferry Crossing, Cross Tay Link Road, Clyde Waterfront and Renfrew Riverside, the A96 Hardmuir to Fochabers Dualling, M9 Winchburgh Interchange, and Aberdeen South Harbour Link Road. We work for a range of clients including national government agencies, local authorities, private developers, and contractors. We use the latest design software and techniques to produce innovative and efficient design solutions for our clients with safety and sustainability at the forefront of our minds.
What does the role involve:
Working as part of the Glasgow Highways team on a variety of projects in the regional and local authority highway sectors, you will act as Principal Engineer to undertake and check the delivery of design solutions and coordinate with other disciplines.
You will be involved in projects from conception to completion including bid management to clarify the project brief, agree deliverables, key milestones, and project methodology; undertaking the detailed design and the checking of outputs as directed: e.g., calculations, models, drawings, sketches, reports, etc., to achieve the optimum solution for the project; assessing, documenting, and communicating design changes to the Client directly. You will also be expected to occasionally coordinate a design team and be involved in planning workload and allocating resources as required.
You will take ownership and responsibility for the quality of work you produce, ensuring that work is delivered in line with the agreed timescales and ensuring you understand and comply with our Company Integrated Management system and all relevant health and safety legislation. You will have the opportunity to recommend and implement improvements to technical policy, processes, and design solutions and share via the knowledge management channels as appropriate.
You will be expected to mentor and coach less experienced team members while continuing to learn from experienced people who share a passion for working together with our clients to deliver technical excellence. You will be expected to develop meaningful and lasting relationships with a portfolio of clients to ensure repeat business.
This is an exciting time to join Sweco, and if you want to be part of a company that is small in all the best ways but large enough to provide a diverse and exciting workload, this job is for you.
To be successful in this role you’ll possess:
* A desire to work in a team, and a great attitude - collaboration will come naturally to you.
* An academic qualification, such as a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent.
* A recognised professional qualification such as CEng or IEng with the ICE, CIHT or other relevant institutions.
* Relevant post-qualification engineering design experience and project delivery in highways and infrastructure projects. This could be either pre-planning services or post-planning detailed design experience.
* Good organisational and project management skills as required to support multiple live projects.
* Experience of highways alignment modelling software such as AutoDesk Civil 3D or Bentley OpenRoads Designer, with some recent experience of undertaking highway, earthworks, and drainage design. Technical knowledge of subject matter is expected. AutoCAD experience is essential.
* Competence using drainage design tools, such as InfoDrainage, MicroDrainage, or Flow.
* A working knowledge of MS Office 365 tools.
* Experience of resource or commercial management on multi-disciplinary projects.
* Strong analytic and problem-solving skills and an interest in finding quick, innovative, and practical solutions.
* The ability to organise and prioritise a design team’s workload to ensure that project timescales are met.
* The ability to travel to sites and offices within the UK when required; a driving license would be helpful but not essential to the role.
* Experience of statutory or third-party approvals.
