Principal Electrical Engineer - Protection & Control

The Principal Electrical Engineer will be responsible for the delivery of high quality, safe and efficient designs for substation and linear HV transmission projects using knowledge and experience to manage consultants and develop internal design capability.
Following the ‘One Murphy’ approach, we’re able to deliver all aspects of the projects we work on Murphy has designed, constructed, and commissioned projects for clients such as National Grid, SSE and Ørsted, on both transmission and distribution networks within the Energy sector.
What you will be doing:
1. To work closely with the Principal Engineer (P&C) and Engineering Manager to engage with suppliers to ensure the most cost effective, compliant P&C design solutions.
2. To prepare single line diagram and key line diagram of substation project.
3. To prepare project specific electrical design for plants like circuit breaker, disconnector, earth switch etc. Design should be in line with generic drawing from OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer).
4. To review protection and control drawings from OEM for overall system integration and design required interface details.
5. To prepare electrical interlocking drawing as requirements in line client’s technical specification.
6. To produce wiring/ termination diagrams, low voltage cable schedule, cable block diagram, core sheets etc. as required for project delivery.
7. Technical support during construction & commissioning including formal response to site technical queries, i.e., preparation of mods for design modification to rectify design error or any other reason that compels to amend the design to fulfil the functional requirements.
8. To prepare technical specification of different P & C equipment for supplier’s quotation.
9. To work closely with other sections of substation engineering design team to enable effective collaboration on multi-disciplinary projects and facilitate an optimal engineering function.
10. To provide supervision of Engineers or CAD Technicians (in-house or subcontractors) to produce detailed designs.
11. To work closely with Principal Engineer and other engineering functions to support tenders, drive innovation and produce cost effective integrated P&C solutions.
12. To provide assistance and mentoring to Apprentices and other members of the design team to aid their continued learning and development.
13. To undertake site visits and surveys as required.
14. To promote the in-house design team in order to establish and maintain future work.
15. To represent the design department when necessary at internal and external meetings.
Who we are looking for:
16. Protection & Control design experience.
17. Knowledge of different types of protection, i.e., Unit/Non-unit, Backup protection etc.
18. Knowledge of with different protection and control scheme for AIS and GIS substation.
19. Previous experience with National Grid technical specifications for substation design.
20. Ability to read electrical drawings for different manufacturer.
21. Efficient in AutoCAD software application at least for making 2D drawing.
22. Good knowledge of using Microsoft Office applications.
