Position: Senior Safeguarding Manager Location : Sparrow’s Lane (Training Ground) Hours: FTE Mon-Fri (matchdays as needed) About Us: Charlton Athletic Football Club is an English professional association football club based in Charlton, south-east London. The club was founded on June 9 th, 1905 and has a very storied history from rising to the top-flight of English Football in the 1930s (First Division) and again in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, to winning the FA Cup in 1947 and to leaving their Valley home in the mid- 1980s only to make an impassioned return in 1992. Historically, the women's team played under Charlton Athletic from 2000 to 2007 but were released to become an independently run team in 2007 following the men's team's relegation from the Premier League. The women's team were originally formed as a non-professional team in 1991 and were highly successful in the early 2000s winning The FA Cup, the League Cup, and the Charity Shield, as well as coming runners-up in the top division in multiple seasons. In February 2021, the club acquired the Charlton Athletic Women's team, turning the team full-time professional, and integrating them to become one club again. Currently, our men's first team competes in League One, the third tier of English football, and our women's team competes in the Women’s Championship, the second h ighest division of women's football in England. Role Description: The Senior Safeguarding Manager for the Club has responsibility for overseeing and directing the safe provision of all activities and associated training relating to children, young people and adults at risk, providing leadership and guidance on all safeguarding matters and relevant legislation. They are responsible for implementing safeguarding awareness and best practice across all areas of the Club. To provide effective Club-wide strategic leadership of safeguarding, with a clear sense of vision, direction and purpose, that embeds and promotes a safeguarding culture in all of our activities that promote and protect the welfare of children and adults at risk. To provide oversight for the safeguarding strategies, policies and practice across Charlton Athletic, Charlton Athletic Women, Boy’s Academy and Girl’s Academy and delivering successful safeguarding outcomes and guidance. Key Responsibilities: Represent and regularly report to the Board on safeguarding policies, procedures and practices within the organisation. Report to the Board regularly on organisational safeguarding and Duty of Care matters, including highlighting areas of risk/concern, identifying areas of poor practice/areas for improvement, and providing analysis of numbers and types of safeguarding concerns/disclosure, complaints and bullying incidents within the organisation. Ensure that Designated Safeguarding Officers have adequate time and resources to fulfil the requirements of their role as well as access to the training relevant to the role. Ensure that all policies relating to safeguarding and welfare are signed off by the Board annually or when require due to a change in legislation or practice. Working with others within the organisation to create a positive, child centred environment. Play a lead role in developing and establishing the organisation’s approach to safeguarding children, young people and adults at risk. Manage cases of poor practice and abuse reported to the organisation. Maintain accurate, confidential and up-to-date documentation on all cases of safeguarding and child protection and report where required in line with GDPR. Manage referrals to children’s social-care services, LADO, the police, the EFL and FA as and when required. Central point of contact for internal and external individuals and agencies. Represent the organisation at external meetings related to safeguarding. Coordinate the dissemination of policy, procedures and resources throughout the organisation. Provide advice and support to all staff, volunteers and associates of the organisation in relation to safeguarding concerns and queries. Advise on the organisation’s training needs and the development of its training strategy; provide training where appropriate. Play a lead role in maintaining and reviewing the organisation’s implementation plan for safeguarding and protecting children. Ensure safeguarding standards are met and maintained. Keep own knowledge and skills up to date. Encourage good practice by promoting and championing the safeguarding policy and procedures. Education/Qualifications/Training: Elite Sport and/or Education or Public Services Background to Management Level Up to date knowledge of Safeguarding policies and practice Up to date knowledge of recent DBS changes Specific Experience: Knowledge/experience of working in the elite sport, education or public service sector and young people. Understanding the key document keeping children safe in education (KCSiE) You will need to be a safeguarding and/or a welfare professional with a relevant degree/professional qualification (or equivalent experience) Worked or volunteered with children or young people, ideally in an elite sporting environment. You must be credible with expert level of knowledge and understanding of current safeguarding legislation, statutory guidance and best practice including recording and handling clear and comprehensive records. Abilities/Skills/Knowledge: Familiar with all aspects of relevant safeguarding rules and regulations and applying them to a diverse workplace. Organisational skills. Discreet, tactful and able to deal with highly confidential and sensitive material with absolute discretion. Communication skills. Flexible. Build and maintain relationships at all levels.
