Te tūnga | The role
We have a 6 month fixed term opportunity, with possibility of extension for a Public Health Medicine Registrar. This is a training position within the Environment Group and will be based at our Christchurch Science Centre.
This role is expected to contribute to the work programme of the Group and will have opportunities to gain experience and competencies across a range of infectious disease services, climate change, and other environmental health project work.
The key functions of a Public Health Medicine Registrar (PHMR) at ESR are to:
* Develop reports related to environmental health issues which may include literature reviews, gap analyses or hazard assessments in several thematic areas such as the impact of climate change on health, environmental assessment of food safety or groundwater quality. These assessments might include policies reviews of various environmental health issues affecting Aotearoa and beyond or gap analysis of standards and regulations.
* The incumbent will be integrated in various ongoing projects and be an active participant and contributor to ESR work to safeguard groundwater and freshwater quality, supporting the public health surveillance to prevent illnesses, address infectious diseases, and enhance pandemic preparedness and ESR’s work on climate change and health informs policies to mitigate climate-related risks.

To be successful in this role, you will have the following:
* Current advanced trainee in their second- or third-year advanced trainee position in the vocational public health medicine training programme New Zealand College of Public Health Medicine.
* Master’s degree in public health.
* A current medical registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
* Interest in surveillance-based epidemiology or emergency response.
* Ability to work across multiple parties, including government departments.
* Experience in building successful relationships internally and externally.
