We’re looking for a proactive and skilled senior frontend developer who not only excels with modern frameworks but, more importantly, has a strong foundation in core development principles. A deep understanding of the fundamentals and being a strong problem solver, regardless of framework, is essential. Additionally, strong SEO best practices are a must. This role offers hybrid working from our head office in Gateshead. About The Role As a Senior Frontend Developer, you will join our Retail Web Team – a cross-functional team of 15 – working on our customer-facing websites. You’ll: Lead development on key frontend projects, working with Product Owners from planning through to delivery Write clean, performant code with SEO best practices in mind Mentor junior developers and help shape our frontend architecture Participate in code reviews and technical planning sessions Average Working Week You'll enjoy a hybrid working arrangement with 2-3 days in our modern Gateshead headquarters and the remainder working remotely. Our development team works in two-week sprints with daily stand-ups and a focus on sustainable pace rather than crunch time. Your time will mostly be spent writing code, working on brand new features and functionality for our websites, helping to define new best practices. The rest of your time will be split between code-reviews, technical refinements with Product Owners, and mentoring of junior developers. Required Skills & Experience 3 Years of frontend development experience Expert in HTML, CSS/SCSS, and vanilla JavaScript Proven experience with React and state management (Redux or similar) Strong understanding of performance optimisation and Core Web Vitals Experience implementing and maintaining SEO best practices Proficiency with Git/GitHub in a team environment Experience consuming RESTful APIs and GraphQL endpoints Experience with pair programming and conducting code reviews Problem-solving mindset Nice-to-haves Experience with AstroJS Knowledge of SMACSS/BEM methodologies Experience leading projects and mentoring junior developers Experience with unit and end-to-end testing tools such as Vitest, Jest or Playwright Understanding of CI/CD pipelines Understanding of Atomic Design Pattern Our Tech Stack We currently use a mixture of React, Angular, and Vanilla JavaScript modules built on the Progress Openedge platform. You will be joining the team responsible for rebuilding this site, and moving it to a unified AstroJS & React world. We also have a mixture of REST & GraphQL APIs, and work with Headless CMS.
