This is an exciting time to join University Hospitals Plymouth within our aseptic services department as a Pharmacy Technician.
We provide cytotoxic chemotherapy, monoclonal antibodies, and parenteral nutrition in-house. We are currently planning for an offsite aseptic unit which will offer opportunities for the future.
We are looking to recruit a Pharmacy Technician who would like the opportunity to develop their leadership and management skills in an innovative department. Further study will be encouraged for you to progress your pharmacy career.
These posts are suitable for those registered technicians who already have accredited checking and Pre and In-process checking (PIPC) qualifications. We also welcome applications from newly qualified registered technicians and community pharmacy technicians without these qualifications who would like to work towards a band 5 post and achieve the qualifications.
Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.
Main duties of the job
1. Co-ordinates and prioritises the daily production workload taking into account clinical priority.
2. Undertake technical duties in the preparation of pharmaceuticals within the Pharmacy Aseptic Unit, ensuring all products are prepared following quality guidelines to ensure patients receive products that are safe to use.
3. To supervise the work of Assistant Technical Officers, Senior Assistant Technical Officers, Specialist Technical Officers, and students in conjunction with the Senior Specialist Technicians.

Job responsibilities
1. To coordinate and prioritise the daily workload to ensure medications are ready according to priorities e.g. clinical urgency and time of appointment.
2. To prepare injectable medicines such as cancer chemotherapy and monoclonal antibody therapy using isolator technology or laminar air flow cabinets, ensuring all in-process checks are completed, within the clean room environment, isolated from direct supervision.
3. To prepare cancer chemotherapy for intrathecal use according to Department of Health guidelines, local trust policy, and departmental procedures.
4. To participate in the preparation of clinical trials, ensuring products are prepared as set out in study-specific documents, standard operating procedures, and appropriate guidelines. Complete all necessary documentation, including the drug accountability as described in the study protocol.
5. To follow carefully all standard operating procedures to ensure all products are made safely and efficiently in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practice Guidelines.
6. To complete the pre and in-process check of aseptically prepared injectables, completing the in-house competency assessment and the Southwest accredited pre and in-process (PIPC) checking accuracy accreditation.
7. To complete the final accuracy check and release against a prescription for items dispensed by other members of the aseptic services team, as an accredited checking technician.
8. To complete a final accuracy check against a prescription for injectables prepared and released as a special manufactured product by an external supplier, as an accredited checking technician.
9. To supervise, train and carry out competency assessments of pharmacy assistants, senior pharmacy assistants, specialist technical officers, and students in the preparation of injectable products under the guidance of the Senior Pharmacy Technician for Education and Training.
10. To complete any environmental monitoring or operator validation tests requested by the quality assurance team.

Person Specification
Knowledge & Experience
1. Proven knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practice
2. Proven knowledge of current legislation and Department of Health guidelines relating to aseptic preparation of injectable medicines
3. Understanding of COSHH
4. Previous demonstrable experience in aseptic preparation
5. Practical demonstrable experience of isolator technology and laminar flow cabinets
Qualifications
1. BTEC/NVQ Level 3 in pharmacy services (or equivalent) Or
2. Registered pharmacy technician (with the GPhC) or eligible to register with the Science Council or equivalent body.
3. Proven post qualification experience as a Pharmacy Technician or Science Manufacturing Technician
4. Accredited pre and in-process checking accreditation (PIPC)
5. Good written and verbal communication skills with ability to demonstrate fluency, clarity, and effectiveness
6. Good training skills
7. Ability to supervise other staff
8. Ability to motivate others.
