This is an exciting and rewarding opportunity to join our Upper limb/Hand Outpatient Therapy Team as a static Band 7 Occupational Therapist. This post will be based on our Aintree Site.
We are looking for a highly skilled and dynamic clinician with significant experience and clinical skill within Upper limb/Hand therapy. The post holder must demonstrate the ability to lead the team delivering an innovative and responsive service to meet the needs of our patients and the organisation. The post holder will be required to manage a varied and complex caseload of patients from GP triage clinics, trauma, elective orthopaedics and rheumatology The post holder will have significant experience in working with adults with complex upper limb/hand presentations and will demonstrate confidence in managing a busy workload. We require a clinician with effective clinical reasoning skills, skilled in the manufacture of splints/ braces and functional rehabilitation.
This role requires excellent communication skills and the ability to work as an effective member of a supportive multi-disciplinary Upper limb/Hand Therapy Team. We are a busy city teaching hospital with excellent links to our Orthopaedic services and we work in an open learning culture. This role is supported by our Consultant Hand Therapist and Advanced Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy Practitioners. We are committed to continual professional development through training, regular supervision, appraisal, and personalised development plans. You will be responsible for the supervision and support of junior staff as well as contributing to service development and research.
Staff are required to work flexibly to meet the needs of the service. This may include supporting seven-day services and shift patterns over an extended working day. We currently offer Musculoskeletal Occupational Therapy services at two main hospital sites (Broadgreen and Aintree).

Clinical
1.1 To undertake assessment of patients including those with diverse or complex presentations/multiple pathologies using advanced clinical reasoning skills and manual assessment techniques to clinically diagnose
1.2 Implement evidence based treatment plans with regards to physical, cognitive, perceptual, psychological and social functioning.
1.3 Deliver and evaluate treatment programmes according to health care needs using a comprehensive range of treatment options.
1.4 To manage waiting lists and prioritise referrals with own team.

1.5 To advise, assist and educate Occupational Therapists on the management of clinically complex patients.
1.6 To take part in acute intervention Weekend Working (optional).
1.7 To carry out home assessments within the patients usual place of residence. Liaising with family, carers, multidisciplinary team and support teams within the community.
1.8 To make recommendations based on Occupational Therapy clinical reasoning, problem solving and risk assessment in order to maintain the patients functional abilities and quality of life within the community.
1.9 To liaise with statutory and voluntary agencies external to the Trust, regarding social care and housing. To provide equipment, recommend and arrange home adaptations to support independent living skills completing necessary documentation.
1.10 To ensure a high standard of patient care is provided, implementing and reviewing clinical standards relevant to the work undertaken.
1.11 To be responsible for training and supporting Therapy staff who’s case load includes patients with scar management and pressure garments needs.
1.12 To work closely with other members of the Clinical Team to develop a co-ordinated Multidisciplinary Service and actively participate in the scheduled Team Meetings as required.
1.13 To ensure effective communication with patients, carers and all other Health & Social Care Professionals regarding all aspects of patient care. This will include patients who will have difficulties in understanding and communication.
1.14 To provide and receive complex information that requires empathy and reassurance, communicating where there may be barriers to understanding.
1.15 To attend Orthopaedic and Rheumatology clinics working with the Consultants, advising, treating and triaging as required.
1.16 To attend any other clinic relevant to the delivery of an effective musculo-skeletal service.
Clinical Governance

2.2 To comply with and contribute to the development of departmental procedures and guidelines.

2.5 To be responsible for maintaining accurate and comprehensive patient treatment records in line with Trust and Departmental Standards of Practice.
2.6 To develop and undertake Clinical Audit.
2.7 To ensure treatments offered to patients are based on the best available clinical evidence.
2.8 To gain valid informed consent in line with Trust & Departmental Policy.

Training & Development
3.1 To be responsible for maintaining own competency to practice through CPD activities and maintain a portfolio which reflects personal development.
3.2 Maintain and develop current knowledge of evidence-based practice within own area of work, developing high level knowledge of particular conditions and patient types.
3.3 To participate in relevant In-Service Training Programmes developed for the Musculo-skeletal Team.
3.4 To organise, lead and participate in In-Service Training programmes for the Occupational Therapy Team in the Musculo-skeletal Service.
3.5 To attend relevant advanced post grad. courses and conferences disseminating information from training attended as required
3.6 Complete annual appraisals and Personal Development Plans for self and staff assigned to your service /team.
3.7 To facilitate regular supervision and mentoring sessions of Occupational Therapists.
3.8 To teach and advise carers and other Health Professionals to ensure provision of good patient care.
3.9 To lead in supervision of students on clinical placement in the role of Clinical Educator.
Managerial & Leadership
4.1 To assist in the supervision of Occupational Therapists, Students and Assistants within the Musculoskeletal Service.
4.2 To provide the Clinical Occupational Therapy Specialist/Managers with relevant information for the planning and development of the unit.
4.3 To work within all Musculoskeletal OT Teams to provide staff cover, in times of annual leave/sickness etc while maintaining own clinical responsibilities.
4.4 To assist the Managers in achieving the departmental objectives and promoting an open style of management.
4.5 To participate in the professional development programme of the Occupational Therapy Department.
4.6 Co-ordinate the effective day to day running of own service and ensure effective dissemination of information.
4.7 To participate in the recruitment and selection of therapy staff under the guidance of Therapy Manager
