Description Principal Structural Design Engineer - Environment (Water) Can be based anywhere in the UK Purpose of Role As a Principal Engineer you will be an important member of the Engineering Design Team and will be required to work with the Discipline Manager(s), Design Team, Design Manager(s) and Design Leads to ensure your discipline design is delivered to highest quality to GT process and in compliance with the BMS and H&S Regulations. This is a technical role, engaged directly on projects, which requires expertise in technical design delivery in the water and wastewater industry. You will be called upon to provide technical expertise and direction on more complex designs. The Principal Engineer can have line management responsibility for senior engineers and others as required. As well as providing direction and promoting innovation, you will be expected to undertake engineering governance of your discipline design activities, ensuring that design integrates with the other discipline design production activities, providing technical support to the supply chain procurement activities and supporting site activities as required. You will also be expected to support the Discipline Manager for knowledge sharing, training, and development of the discipline engineers, including mentoring and support of early careers. Key Accountabilities Work as a principal structural design engineer within a growing team, delivering structural design in water/wastewater related projects. Undertaking detailed design in reinforced concrete and steelwork for below and above ground structures related to water non infra and infrastructure projects. Attend site visits, carry out structural assessments of existing structures i.e. water retaining structures, retaining walls, various structural assets within water/wastewater treatment works and produce assessment reports. Lead teams of structural engineers and work with various disciplines, including support to construction team. Ensure technical compliance and excellence on projects. Default approver for design outputs to ensure technical assurance and quality control. Seek optimal solutions and drive our teams to produce efficient designs that balance capital and operational cost benefits. Ensure design for buildability, safe construction, and operation, working alongside project delivery peers. Ensure procedural governance is adhered to. Working as part of the Design team to ensure scheme designs adhere to client specifications and standards. Working as part of the Design team to ensure full compliance with relevant Health, Safety and Environmental Legislation. Leading and promoting innovation, value engineering and digital design. Technical problem solving throughout the project life cycle (e.g. from concept design through to final construction support), moreover, to ensure that potential issues are identified, mitigated and or safely managed through technical governance and risk and opportunity management. Provide pre-contract technical governance. Champion of lessons learnt on projects, covering good and bad to feedback to be promoted or avoided on future schemes. Potential Line Management of multi-disciplinary Senior Design Engineers. Sharing and imparting knowledge to our teams, this is essential, as is the need to mentor and develop our expanding design team. Developing and supporting staff to encourage them towards accreditation with professional bodies (e.g. ICE, IStructE). This is not an exhaustive list of duties. Discipline Specific Technical Expertise Required Proven knowledge of design in reinforced concrete structures for the water/ wastewater industry. Knowledge and experience of working to the current British Standards, Eurocodes and specifically BS EN 1992: (Eurocode 2) Design of concrete structures. Experience with software packages commonly used in structural design such as Structural Analysis Software, STAADPro (Design of RC Circular Tanks) or Strand7 (for FEA) TEKLA TEDDS or similar design software’s. Experience in providing structural assessments, analysis and specifications. Professional Expertise and Qualifications Required Educated to Degree level in Engineering or other equivalent qualification. Demonstrable experience of working within the Municipal Water and Wastewater industries, working with a variety of clients. Strong preference for Chartered Member of a recognised professional Engineering body (IStructE or ICE preferred). Excellent knowledge of working in a multi-disciplinary engineering design team in water engineering. Knowledge and experience in structural design for below and above ground water retaining structures. Preferred experience in structural engineering of non-infrastructure projects, preferably across all stages of design through to construction. Proven knowledge of standard engineering practices, techniques, procedures and structural principles. Supervising work, ensuring that it is carried out to the appropriate technical and quality standards and that it is managed to budget and programme. Supporting structural engineering projects, performing analyses and calculations as appropriate for water sector. Supports continuous improvement and change management efforts. Knowledge of current H&S legislation and British Standards and experience in applying them across designs.
