Overview: We are seeking a Crane Operator/Foreman to join our team. We are in the intermodal business -- transloading, storing, and draying cargo and shipping containers to and from the Ports of Virginia. Our warehouse and storage yard are located a few miles from the Virginia International Gateway port, in Portsmouth, VA. We handle all types of cargo, including overweight, breakbulk, out of gauge, and over-dimensional.
The successful candidate will be responsible for operating an all-terrain Terex RT-120 crane to move, lift, and position cargo containers and equipment in a safe and efficient manner. The ideal candidate should have experience in crane and forklift operation, rigging, be able to read and interpret load charts, and possess problem-solving skills. This person will also oversee daily operations related to all aspects of our business, ensuring efficiency and adherence to safety protocols, schedules, and customer needs. We are seeking an individual who is reliable, detail-oriented, and safety-conscious.
General duties:
* Operate crane(s) and other heavy equipment in a safe and efficient manner
* Read and interpret blueprints and diagrams
* Perform pre-operational checks on the crane and related equipment
* Ensure that all safety protocols are followed
* Communicate with other personnel in the area to ensure safety
* Maintain records of crane operations
* Operate forklift(s) to move and load cargo
* Control, organize, and transload customer shipments on the yard, coming into and leaving ports and rail lines; inspect cargo for damage and decide how to move and store cargo safely on the yard
* Manage (and work alongside) yard workers and coordinate work with warehouse employees and contractors to meet deadlines; this position leads by example and is a hands-on job
* Prepare customer cargo for transport – manage warehouse and yard workers and oversee correct procedures to palletize, shrink wrap, add lot identifiers, strap and chain loads, and rig cargo containers
* Manage the movement of trucks, chassis, and trailers to meet dray and OTR customer requirements
* Maintain and organize repairs for company vehicles and equipment (Note: before agreeing to any repairs, price quotes must be approved by one or both owners).
* Keep the yard safe, neat and organized, including identifying needed supplies, materials, and equipment, and initiate actions with admin staff to order necessary items.
* Participate in management meetings, and communicate effectively with owners, administrative and other employees, customers, brokers, drivers, contractors and vendors, and state and Federal officials
* Ensure compliance with company warehouse, OSHA, and environmental procedures, and with local, state, and federal safety and material handling regulations
* Maintain a safe workplace and respond to any hazardous materials spills with immediate clean-up plans; ensure that safety gear is worn by employees at all times
* Assist with onboarding and mentoring of new warehouse and yard workers
* Arrive at work early to plan and prepare the day’s activities; stay until customer loads are completed
* Other duties as assigned
Position Requirements:
* High school diploma or GED, previous yard/warehouse experience required; some college is a plus
* Supervisory/management experience required
* Forklift experience and certification is required; rigging experience
* Boom crane experience is a must have
* Maintain a proactive, positive approach to the company, the position, and to daily work
* Understand OSHA compliance requirements and HAZMAT requirements; must follow all health and safety procedures and regulations as dictated by the organization and the Federal and state authorities
* Active driver license and own transportation required; CDL
* Must be able to physically stand, sit, move, squat, walk, and climb during the course of the shift
* Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds or more
* Occasional night and weekend work will be needed
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills
* Able to work in an outside, fast-paced environment with multiple priorities
* Able to think, plan, and work independently; critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities are a must
* Inventory management/job control experience is a plus
