If you love to be busy planning and organising, and making things happen, then this role could be ideal for you
The business designs, builds, and supplies a range of systems across the UKs nuclear industry.
They have projects where a piece of work is done for a customer; these vary in size, from small scoping and feasibility studies, to the design of complex systems.
There are many separate tasks that go into making sure that the project is completed successfully.
Youll be working with the senior Project Manager, and learning from him. He has a lot of projects to work on, and youll be helping with this.
There will be a lot of work with spreadsheets (Microsoft Project or Excel); and a lot of detail involved, for example the number of hours needed from staff, the rate charged, and parts to buy.
Youll be updating information and data; and sometimes moving it between various spreadsheets. Youll be completing lots of forms, and making sure that company standards are maintained and improved
And youll be speaking with clients and internal staff; getting information and updating people on how things are going.
There will be plenty of opportunity to use your logical thinking to solve problems, and come up with solutions.
There is a commercial aspect, and youll develop a knowledge of business case production, budgets, income management, and margins.
In time youll get to represent the business in client meetings to discuss progress of projects, and make sure that if the client has any requests, that they dont change the scope of the project (very important as it could include things that werent quoted for).
THE NUCLEAR INDUSTRY
This is an expanding industry, and one with great prospects.
There is a clear focus on sustainability, and the industry plays a key role in working toward net-zero emissions.
You may have heard of Small Modular Reactors; they are the newer generation of nuclear technology. Some of the projects youll be working on relate to the building of the first of these in the UK.
LEARNING, DEVELOPMENT, AND FUTURE PROSPECTS
Youll have courses to go on, and qualifications to study for. There is a clear path to become a Project Manager, should you wish.
For example, the current senior Project Manager started with the business as a teenager, and worked his way up through the different levels.
WHAT YOULL GET
A basic salary of between £28,000-32,000. This will increase significantly in time, particularly if you go down the Project Management route.
The company has ambitious growth plans, and each person plays a part in this. And youll get a profit-share bonus if the business does well (once the business reaches a certain level of profit, 10% of the rest is divided amongst staff- could be £2,000-3,000 or more). Some of the profit also goes into a fund, and staff can vote how to use it; previous examples include team days out, comfy sofas for the break-out room, and a pool table.
Youll work 37.5 hours a week, and will have the option of working 4 days a week (with longer hours each day); or the standard 5 day week.
WHAT YOULL NEED
Experience is not needed in the specifics; this will be trained. But you will ideally need some kind of administration related work experience.
A degree is preferred, and ideally something related to engineering (ideally Mechanical or Aerospace, maybe Electrical / Electronic). But other degrees will be considered.
Youll need to understand what people are talking about (for example parts of project and equipment). So if youre not from a technical background, youll need to be comfortable learning this part.
Clearly, youll need to be very organised, able to keep on top of things, and have great attention to detail.
And youll need very strong Excel skills (or Microsoft Project).
Youll also need to be confident in speaking with people, and maybe challenging them where required, or chasing them for information. At the early stages you wont be doing so much of this, but will do in time.
Unfortunately if you are not a UK citizen then this role will not be suitable; the reason is that you wouldnt be able to work on certain projects (especially in the defence sector), due to the security clearance that is needed.
WHERE YOULL BE DOING IT
Location is Bridgwater in Somerset. Its commutable from areas including Taunton, Yeovil, Weston Super Mare, and to the south of Bristol.
The role is office based, and not suitable for working from home (though if you choose the 5 day week then you can generally work from home on a Friday.
