Clinical Undertake specialised holistic moving and handling assessments for the Trust including those with complex presentations or environmental challenges Manage risk reduction through re design, training and/or equipment provision as required under current legislation Provide specialist advice and make decisions with due respect for the rights and dignity and cultural needs of the individual patients and the health and safety needs of staff Communicate often highly complex information to senior management managers and general staff to inform them of the range of solutions and management of risks Provide moving and handling assessments to all hospital staff, as required, formulating a solution and appropriate plan based on sound knowledge of evidence-based practice and risk management Assess and evaluate the safe ergonomic practice of moving and handling across the Trust and be actively involved in initiating changes in line evidence-based practice and clinical governance Evaluate staff practice, analyse reassess and intervene as required Work alongside staff in the clinical areas to promote safe moving and handling To be highly competent in assessing a wide range of complex moving and handling based on advanced theoretical knowledge of legal requirements, risk assessment in situations where conflicting evidence is present Keep professionally up to date with clinical and moving and handling practice, through post registration educational studies, networking, conferences, and be proactive as a manager to other staff in this respect To be aware of other interventions that can be used in conjunction with health and safety practice to maximise staff and patient benefit and work collaboratively with other health professionals and the health and safety committee Leadership Support Lead the Moving and Handling Team Interpret and disseminate existing and new moving and handling legislation ensuring that the Trust is made aware and understands necessary actions for compliance Investigate all moving and handling incidents and near misses reported via Datix. Monitor analyse and action through identification of trends and make recommendations to resolve issues Liaise with colleagues from other disciplines within and external to Ashford and St Peters Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, ensuring effective communication and networking, including the health and Safety Executive (HSE) Medical Devices Regulatory Authority (MHRA) National Back Exchange (NBE) professional body for Moving and handling professionals Advise and work with Senior Staff in the management of Occupational Health staff referrals following musculoskeletal absence and returning to work. Undertaking risk assessments and task analysis to support staff who have been referred to Occupational Health Research, assess and evaluate ergonomic equipment and product with manufactures Ensure risk assessments and care plans on the electronic patient record reflect current best practice and national guidance To identify and manage challenging behaviours which may create a barrier to optimal manual handling in the clinical setting To support with PSIRF investigations in relation to moving and handling incidences To encourage others to seek advice and solutions to problems in relation to moving and handling Ensure Trust compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (amended 2002) for all aspects of moving and handling Information and reporting Maintain accurate and up to date records on staff training and risk assessment in accordance with Trust Policies With the Nurse Consultant Harms Free Care report to the Health and Safety Committee any clinical concerns in relation to moving and handling Provide reports for legal and risk purposes as requested Undertake audits outlining compliance of the Moving and Handling Policy, including moving and handling assessment documentation, handling techniques, training compliance for the National Health Litigation Authority (NHSLA) and Care Quality Commission (CQC) as required Responsible for the development and implementation of policies, procedures and guidelines relevant to moving and handling To support in setting and maintaining optimal standards of clinical practice and training in relation to moving and handling To keep up to date and act consistently with quality standards and guidelines within moving and handling To monitor the quality of work in own area, raise quality issues and related risks and bring to the attention of the Nurse Consultant for Harms Free Care Research and development To lead the evaluation of clinical practice within the Moving and handling service, through clinical audit and/or research projects. Implement changes in line with evidence-based practice. Service improvement Identify opportunities, and participate in initiatives to improve the moving and handling service in order to provide the best possible patient care and staff experience within available resources Provide Ashford and St Peters NHS Foundation Trust advice on the planning and remodelling of departments, applying moving and handling principles and experience Develop and implement the Moving and Handling Policy and Bariatric Handling Guidelines throughout the Trust To work in clinical areas alongside staff to develop their understanding Education and training Monitor compliance with mandatory training and alert areas of concern to the Nurse Consultant Harms Free Care Advise Managers and Learning Development Team with the moving and handling training needs analysis for Trust staff Responsible for the design, organisation and delivery of clinical moving and handling training Trust wide to minimise risk for all staff in relation to moving and handling of patients and objects. Responsibility to ensure that specialist moving and handling training is current, contemporary, based on best practice, meets legislative and local policy guidance and is appropriate to all staff needs Design and delivery of manual handling training programmes for local Moving and Handling Facilitators Provide Care Enhanced training to supplement mandatory training for example Bariatric complex handling workshops. Check knowledge with skills drills for emergency complex handling situations Maintain accurate training records Contribute to multidisciplinary training programmes, including the development of E - learning packages General responsibilities Maintain active status on professional register Act always in accordance with professional code and guiding documents Adhere to Trust Policy and Procedure Maintain up to date skills and knowledge and maintain awareness of professional issues Maintain a professional portfolio To participate in the appraisal process To identify, report and address poor performance issues to the Nurse Consultant Harms Free Care and feedback to the clinical area(s) To support the Harms Free Care Team and organisation by carrying out any other duties as qualified and able
