Overview of project/role
This role exists to develop and support the implementation of improvement initiatives, which drive progress against core business objectives for Track. The role will be within the Track Integration and Optimisation team. One of the aims of this team is to embed continuous improvement in Track. The job holder should expect to work with staff of all levels across the department, on days and on nights.
The job holder will need to ensure that continuous improvement opportunities are translated into actionable plans which are delivered within varying timescales i.e. through lean coaching and training of staff. The role will also help to develop a continuous improvement culture and mentality i.e. through coaching of staff, lean tool development and implementation, or workshop facilitation.
Key Accountabilities
* Develop and deliver continuous improvement initiatives, ensuring that the agreed milestones and targets are delivered and the programme achieves its agreed objectives in terms of efficiency and improved methodology.
* Support and coach front line staff to take on new working practices and improve the efficiency of the working environment.
* Ensure successful transition from old working practices to new business standard operating models.
* Act as Lean / Six Sigma subject matter experts for the business.
* Lead by example and demonstrate the effectiveness and benefits of working to new processes/practices.
* Ensure the continuous improvement initiatives do not adversely impact the safe and efficient operation of the railway and manage all risk associated with this.
* Ensure improvements in performance, cost and efficiency are measurable, demonstrated, delivered and sustained.
* Engage with stakeholders (e.g. Trade Unions, Engineering, Senior Management, etc.) to ensure the success and appropriate application of lean tools and techniques.
* Support the Continuous Improvement Lead and Senior Track team with larger improvement initiatives or changes as required.
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
Skills
* Have curiosity, commitment and enthusiasm for change, with the tenacity and resilience to overcome opposition (Essential).
* Good ability to effectively influence and manage numerous stakeholders.
* Good ability to examine complex problems using a range of techniques, and generate solutions that are easily understood.
* Highly developed communication skills, both orally and in writing. Needs to be able to communicate effectively in Powerpoint (i.e. using words and data).
* Ability to work under tight time constraints in an environment of high expectations and pressure.
* Proven ability to take a continuous improvement initiative from feasibility through to successful delivery, generating and maintaining business support.
* Practical application of experience to draw credibility and influence staff of varying stakeholder levels.
Knowledge
* Qualification in Lean/Six Sigma or similar methodology (e.g. green belt or similar level qualification).
* Good understanding of building a continuous improvement culture.
* An awareness of operational expectations and ways of working (e.g. through production, stores or operational experience).
* Demonstrable knowledge of effective stakeholder and risk management.
* Good knowledge of designing continuous improvement initiatives that have lasting results (Essential).
* Good knowledge of developing and managing a prioritised work programme based to time and cost.
* Good awareness of statistical analysis techniques or visualisation tools, e.g. the use of advanced spreadsheet and database skills, or the use of data visualisation dashboards.
Experience
* Proven experience of managing stakeholders at all levels across an organisation.
* Proven experience of delivering improvement using industry best practice.
* Proven experience of delivering change/improvement initiatives in an operational environment (Essential).
* Good experience of complex activity planning and organising to achieve business objectives.
* Good experience in indirect management of others to achieve a common end.
* Good training or coaching experience (ideally of staff at varying levels).
