THE ELMS CARE CENTRE
We are looking for a care assistant with a genuine desire to work with the elderly. We have a full-time position available for day shifts and night shifts and would consider part-time hours.
HEALTH CARE ASSISTANT JOB DESCRIPTION
OBJECTIVES OF THE POST
1. To work with other staff as a team, in meeting the personal care needs of the resident, in a way that respects and promotes their privacy, dignity, independence, choice, rights and personal fulfilment. To assist in enhancing the quality of life for residents by valuing them as individuals and empowering him or her to take control over their own life decisions.
2. To have a commitment to ensure all residents receive security, support and dedicated care within a traditional family environment, and giving them the opportunity to maximise their independence, privacy, dignity, self-respect and choice at all times.
3. By participating as an active member of the team, promoting the Elms Philosophy of Care and, contributing to the efficient day to day running of the home and promoting a warm and friendly atmosphere for the residents and their guests.
4. To actively encourage and support the principles of National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in Care.
RESPONSIBLE TO THE: Manager, trained Nurse and Senior Care Assistant.
HOURS OF WORK
To be determined by the Manager. Shift/weekend and night work will be necessary on a rota basis.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES – DAY AND NIGHT STAFF
1. To ensure that all residents have an equal opportunity to enjoy a friendly, homely and stimulating atmosphere within the Home, thereby encouraging them to lead as full a life as possible.
2. To assist with the provision of all aspects of care as directed by the residents, and their individualised care plans, encouraging them to maintain their independence by allowing them to undertake such tasks of which they are individually capable.
3. To assist in maintaining agreed standards of care to meet the total needs of each resident according to a planned programme of care which is reviewed at regular intervals.
4. To assist with resident’s care in accordance with in-service training received, paying attention to resident’s cleanliness and overall well-being, by assisting with washing and bathing, toileting, aiding with and promoting continence, brushing hair, cleaning teeth, cutting finger nails, dressing and undressing. Ensure there is an adequate supply of toiletries.
5. To support named residents by fulfilling a keyworker role.
6. To attend training courses and staff meetings and to act upon discussions and information generated at these meetings.
7. To communicate politely, respectfully and professionally and to observe and report on condition of residents to the Manager, Nurse in charge and Senior Care Assistant.
8. To assist in serving meals, drinks and support feeding of those residents who are unable to feed themselves promoting the resident’s dignity.
9. To assist in the promotion of mental and physical activity.
10. To communicate with residents, liaising with activities organiser to discuss individual likes and dislikes as well as assisting and participating in the social activities with residents.
11. To assist in the care of resident’s clothes ensuring clothing is named and in good repair.
12. To assist in light cleaning e.g. wheelchairs, the making and changing of beds as appropriate and tidying residents rooms as you go.
13. To assist in the care of dying residents.
14. To learn the correct use of all equipment provided and use with care.
15. To assist in being responsible for the security of the building.
16. To work effectively with and supervise volunteers.
17. Keep accurate and up to date records using the online system.
18. Answering bells, the door and telephone, dealing with such calls in a polite and professional manner, passing on the information in the appropriate way and to the appropriate person.
19. Maintaining confidentiality at all times.
20. To adhere to all policies and procedures.
NIGHT DUTY
1. To be alert and attentive to the needs of the residents throughout the night shift.
2. Staff are not permitted to sleep during their period of duty, including breaks. Failure to remain awake on duty will be treated as a dismissible offence.
3. To answer call bells immediately.
4. To assist in the preparation and serving of hot and cold beverages to residents throughout the night and to organise early morning tea.
5. To ensure the tables in the dining area are ready for breakfast and lounges are tidy and well presented.
6. Carry out regular checks and repositioning as directed by the nurse in charge and as indicated in care plans or on handover sheet.

OTHER
1. The post holder will be expected to comply with the staff uniform dress code policy at The Elms. Uniforms are provided free of charge and must be worn when on duty.
2. To carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by the Manager or nurse in charge.
