Job Purpose
To provide in-depth technical expertise in the management of data, samples and equipment to aid in the delivery of marine strandings and entanglement investigation, mitigation, research or other associated projects. Provide advice and manage the creation, set up and best operation of technical and financial resources to aid the delivery of research and project delivery objectives. In addition, the post holder will undertake a range of technical support activities in line with the College/School Strategy.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Provide in-depth technical support to academic, policy and volunteer stakeholders within the field of marine ecology and strandings response. Contribute to the overall smooth and efficient running of the projects to ensure an excellent experience for all users.
2. Provide in-depth technical knowledge, solutions, and advice to service users to maximise the learning experience and/or contribute to the delivery of research objectives.
3. Support the project financial and auditing requirements, including equipment and staff procurement.
4. Assist in strandings investigation, including attendance at necropsies and sampling exercises when necessary.
5. Help support the strandings coordinator in public-facing management of strandings reports, including assisting in curating strandings reports in the Scottish Marine Animal Stranding Scheme (SMASS) database and assisting in out of hours emergency cover for reporting.
6. Provide input into public outreach and engagement activities, including assisting with the BeachTrack app management and the SMASS social media channels in liaison with the SMASS director and UofG communication team.
7. Monitor technical standards in liaison with relevant senior staff. Advise, implement and evaluate improvements to existing protocols as required.
8. With input from Principal Investigator collect, analyse and interpret project financial and technical data using standard procedures and ensure that accurate records are kept and databases are updated accordingly. Present findings accurately. This may include research and/or teaching related data.
9. Advise, train and provide guidance to service users in the best application and operation of technical resources.
10. Maintain appropriate stock levels, including appropriate preparation of specialised media and samples as required, and purchase consumables and supplies within defined budget. Ensure safe implementation and ongoing storage of potentially hazardous materials.
11. Ensure the safe and efficient functioning of the technical work-space and facilities in consultation with relevant senior staff. This includes, but is not limited to, supporting the completion of risk assessments and COSHH assessments, ensuring that all Health and Safety paperwork is completed timeously and recorded accurately, and implementing and adhering to all applicable health and safety policies, including specialist legal procedures for certain materials.
12. Supervise staff including allocating work and monitoring progress and outputs.
13. Undertake general administration as required in roles within teaching laboratories. This may include recording student attendance and collating student assessment marks for feedback to the academic lead.
14. Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team meetings/discussions and contribute to the wider College/School activities as required.
15. Keep up to date with advances in the relevant discipline and apply this knowledge to technical activities to further enhance the learning experience and/or contribute to the delivery of research aims.

Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential
1. Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 7 [Advanced Higher / Scottish vocational Qualification level 3, Higher National Certificate] or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role.
2. Detailed technical knowledge and expertise in relevant discipline.
3. Up to date knowledge of relevant laboratory Health and Safety legislation.
Desirable
1. BSc Degree or equivalent in relevant discipline is desirable.
2. Working towards Professional Registration with relevant body.
Skills

1. Proven in-depth technical expertise relevant to the specific discipline or research project (as outlined in the post-specific information and advert).
2. Strong understanding of University of Glasgow processes, particularly within project implementation, procurement, and financial management.
3. Excellent IT skills, including proficiency in relevant software packages.

Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 5, £26,038 - £30,505 per annum pro rata.
This post is part time (17.5 hours per week) and fixed term for up to 12 months from the start date.
