JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
The Recruit Officer is a non-sworn member of the WPI Police Department who will support our mission to provide a safe and secure living and learning environment for all members of and visitors to our community.
The Recruit Officer will be hired after completing all mandatory Massachusetts Police Training Council (MPTC) pre-academy entry processes, and with the understanding that the recruit officer will enter a Massachusetts Police Training Council (MPTC) recruit-officer police academy as a new candidate hire and successfully graduate from that academy achieving POST certification as a law enforcement officer.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Responsibilities:
1. Assist WPI Police staff by performing safety and security inspections of campus buildings and grounds on foot and in vehicles.
2. Backfill position of WPI Police Dispatcher. Provide public safety related services to members and visitors to the WPI Community.
3. Renders assistance to those in need and has the knowledge and ability to make referrals to campus resources as applicable.
4. Able to author well written reports.
5. Provides information to the public and community members while promoting positive campus safety and community relations.
6. When offered, attends and graduates from a MPTC authorized full time recruit officer academy.
Depending on the amount of time between hire and the beginning of the recruit academy, the candidate will be required to successfully complete ten weeks of WPI Police dispatch and field training.
Once the recruit officer graduates from the academy, they will be required to complete any outstanding WPI Police dispatch and field training before transitioning to the role of Campus Police Officer.
Requirements:
7. High School Diploma.
8. Successful completion of all required MPTC pre-academy entrance requirements.
9. Successful attendance and subsequent graduation from MPTC recruit officer academy.
10. Certification as a law-enforcement officer by the Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Commission.
11. In addition to POST certification, all candidates must obtain their warrant of appointment as a Special State Police Officer (SSPO).
12. Successful completion of WPI Police Field Training and Performance Appraisal Program before officers will be able to work on their own.
13. Applicants must be age twenty-one (21) at time of application.
14. Must possess or be able to obtain a Massachusetts Class A Large Capacity License to Carry Firearms
15. Must have a valid Massachusetts Class D operator's license at time of appointment.
Candidates need to provide a cover letter and three letters of reference, must pass MPTC recruit officer course (ROC) eligibility requirements, and meet POST minimum standards for certification.
