School Nurse

The Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a part time School Nurse at the School. The Medical Centre provides first aid and emergency care and treatment, health care and support to all members of the school community and has become an integral and well used facility. The purpose of the role is to provide a high standard of service within NMC guidelines to pupils, members of staff, and any visitors while on the school site, as well as providing a health advice service as appropriate and managing pupils with chronic medical conditions. Medical cover for weekday and Saturday sporting fixtures is also provided by the School Nurses and Casual School Nurses.
The School Nurses work closely with the Assistant Head (pupil welfare) who has responsibility for pastoral care and student issues within the School; the Schools counsellors; and the Section Heads who oversee the three pastoral units within the School (Lower School, Middle School and Sixth Form). The Nurses also work with the Head of Personal Social and Health Education to advise on health education issues.
Key Responsibilities
* Organising and running nurse drop:in health and welfare clinics for pupils and staff.
* Providing first aid (physical and mental health) and emergency care and treatment as necessary, which includes pitch side/sports emergency first aid.
* Providing wellbeing and mental health support, and signposting to support service as appropriate, in conjunction with the Assistant Head (pupil welfare).
* Ensuring pupil care plans are followed as required, eg in cases of asthma, epilepsy, diabetes and anaphylaxis.
* Operating procedures for the control of infectious diseases as required.
* Administering medications under protocol and keeping accurate dispensing records.
* Maintaining the stock in the treatment room and in first aid kits and being responsible for the hygiene and tidiness of the area.
* Maintaining all School medical records accurately, confidentially and securely, to ensure that all pupils records are up to date so that staff have access to up:to:date and relevant details of pupil medical needs.
* Keeping up:to:date with professional developments through the Royal College of Nursing, and the Independent Schools Nurse Clinical Supervision Group.
* Adhering to the NMC code of professional conduct and being conversant with the scope of professional practice and other NMC advisory papers.
* Ensuring effective handover between Nursing shifts as required.
Skills and Qualifications
* A professional nursing qualification resulting in the applicant being a registered nurse on the NMC register, with at least 2 years post registration experience.
* Good communication skills with the ability to produce clear, concise, timely and appropriate oral and written communications, maintaining appropriate confidentiality.
* Sensitivity : the ability to listen well and understand others needs and perspectives.
* Self:motivation :the applicant will need to be both conscientious and willing to show initiative.
* Teamwork :the School Nurses will need to work closely with pupils, teachers and nonteaching staff in order to provide the highest levels of care. Good communications with all parts of the school community will be vital to the success of this post.
