We have an exciting opportunity for two Consultants to join the Supplier Control Testing Team within Business Services. The team are responsible for planning and delivering controls testing of our high risk suppliers against a range of Operational and Conduct risk categories, and engage with a broad set of stakeholders both internally and externally.
As a Controls Testing Consultant, you’ll take end to end ownership of a number of supplier controls tests within the annual plan, and deliver these to time and quality in line with the methodology. Your assessments will detail the effectiveness of controls and provide assurance that our suppliers are meeting the requirements set out in the contract and NBS supplier policy. Where gaps are identified, you’ll present recommendations for remediation and work with the business area to ensure the supplier progresses an action plan in a timely manner.
This is a fantastic opportunity for an organised individual with an analytical mindset, who is conscious of the importance of controls and confident engaging with stakeholders of all levels.
If successful the true title of the role that you’ll be hired into will be: Controls Testing Consultant, Chief Controls Office.
At Nationwide we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected.
For this job you'll spend at least two days per week, or if part time you'll spend 40% of your working time, based at either our Swindon, London, Northampton or Bournemouth office. If your application is successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this works.
There is the expectation to attend a quarterly team meeting in Swindon, if based out of London, Northampton or Bournemouth.
What you’ll be doing
You’ll be undertaking controls testing primarily by facilitating sessions with the supplier SMEs to evidence the requirements set out in the central framework. There is also an element of desktop assessment where evidence has been shared outside of those sessions. The framework covers a broad set of risk categories tested on a risk-based approach, which include Security, Business Continuity, IT, HR, Data Governance, Fraud, Financial Crime, Payments, Complaints, Subcontractor, ESG, Member Protection and Conflicts of Interest.
You’ll maintain robust documentation which clearly articulates the judgement, rationale and supporting evidence to support the drafting of control testing issues and reports.
You will share reporting outputs with the internal supplier relationship manager and relevant risk functions, ensuring an action plan is put in place to address areas requiring remediation and that these are seen through to completion.
On the job training will complement your existing experience and give you the knowledge and skills you need to be able to thrive in the role. The varied nature of testing is supported by an ongoing Route to Competency.
We are an inquisitive team who drive continuous improvement at pace, and you’ll have opportunity to shape and evolve the way we do things to deliver ultimate value for the Society.

What makes us different
Nationwide is the world’s largest building society. With over 15 million customers, we have a relationship with almost a quarter of the UK’s population. We’ve got the scale to compete with the big banks, but we’re not a bank.
As a building society, we’re owned by our members – that’s our customers who have their current account, mortgage or savings with us. It means we can do things differently to deliver our Purpose – Banking – but fairer, more rewarding, and for the good of society.
When you work at Nationwide, you can experience that difference for yourself. You’ll be part of a high-performing, purpose-driven organisation that offers rewarding career experiences and a highly competitive range of benefits to match. You’ll also be joining us at an important time as we seek to reach more and more people in the UK. We want everyone in the UK to know that they don’t have to bank with a bank.
