We're on a journey to build a workforce reflective of our Borough.
We are committed to fostering diverse teams where everybody can bring their authentic selves to work and feel that they belong. If you want to work for a Council where everybody is encouraged to meet their full potential and make a difference in our neighbourhoods, we would love to hear from you!
Your role:
The Public Relations team is responsible for communicating with more than 300,000 residents through both traditional and digital channels; ensuring content is relevant, timely and targeted.
Wigan is undergoing a massive transformation, with significant investment and exciting regeneration projects, including the flagship £135m town centre redevelopment, making it one of the most attractive propositions in the Northwest in 2025 and beyond.
A new post has been created to help tell the story of Wigan’s exciting renaissance.
As the Communications and Marketing lead working on regeneration and growth, it will be your job to tell the story of Wigan, building on the existing place brand to develop a compelling and ambitious narrative which instils confidence in Wigan’s future with residents and investors alike.
About you:
You will be responsible for engaging key stakeholders, with a focus on Makinson Arcade tenants, building positive relationships and developing and delivering marketing strategies designed to increase footfall to Wigan town centre to support commercial targets.
In collaboration with wider stakeholder groups, including the council’s internal communications team, local businesses, and partners, such as the Grand Arcade shopping centre, Wigan market and the college, you will work together to develop incentives and join up marketing plans to achieve the best outcomes.
You will create content in a variety of formats, capturing stories and highlighting good news stories from across Wigan’s exciting regeneration journey, while leading on communications and marketing activity for Makinson Arcade, including managing the website and social media presence on behalf of tenants.
About us:
Wigan Council has been voted ‘Overall Council of the Year’ at the APSE (Association for Public Service Excellence) Awards. We are signed up to the Greater Manchester Continuous Service Commitment ensuring that your service will be continuous or 'unbroken' between the supporting organisations.
The Progress with Unity plan is a place movement for change for the next decade, bringing a new era for Wigan Borough. It draws on the strengths of our individual organisations, recognising that together we can achieve much more for our communities by delivering on our 2 place missions; create fair opportunities for all children, families, residents and businesses and make our towns and neighbourhoods flourish for those who live and work in them.
You will be part of an award-winning PR team which strives to be the very best. You will be supported with professional development to enhance your skills and experience personally and those of the team. You will be part of a vibrant, exciting and fun atmosphere in which no two days are the same and will be working on the biggest issues which matter most to both the council and most importantly our residents.
Here at Wigan, we are proud to support flexible working patterns, when the service can accommodate this. We also take a blended approach to where we work, depending on the work we do.
