Consultant Paediatric Haematologist (Focus: Non Malignant Haematology)

This new post is part of the service development to centralise and develop paediatric haematology. It will consolidate expertise in the department and will focus primarily on non-malignant haematology. We are looking for a motivated individual to help drive forward this exciting phase within paediatric haematology in Newcastle. The candidate must be able to evidence relevant expertise and training. The post is open to those who hold FRCPath (or equivalent) and have relevant paediatric experience, as well as candidates who have trained as paediatricians and can demonstrate relevant training in haematology.
In addition to the challenges of the role, we can offer you a commitment to teaching, education, research and audit. Candidates for the post must be registered medical practitioners and on, or eligible to join, the Specialist Register within six months of the date of the Appointments Committee.
Main duties of the job
This is a new post to expand and develop the regional paediatric haematology service after centralisation of services into one department based in the Great North Children's Hospital. This follows expansion of patient numbers and will allow consolidation of consultant areas of interest feeding into the stem cell transplant and cellular therapies service.
Depending on the interests and expertise of the candidate, this may include clinical management of patients with non-malignant conditions including haemoglobinopathies and malignant haematological disorders.
Haemostasis and thrombosis services are provided by the adult haematology team in Royal Victoria Infirmary and are not included in the paediatric haematology service.
Job responsibilities
Clinical:
* The main focus of the post is to support and develop the non-malignant service, however there will be a requirement for involvement in all aspects of haematology including laboratory, consultative and malignant haematology.
* Responsibility for patients with non-malignant haematological disorders including rare inherited anaemias.
* Clinical care of patients treated at the Primary Treatment Centre at GNCH.
Laboratory and consultative haematology duties:
* Contribute to the paediatric haematology laboratory service.
* Bone marrow trephines are reported by the regional SIHMDS (NEHODS).
* Contribute to the liaison haematology with secondary and tertiary services.
Bone marrow transplant:
* Opportunity for pre- and post-transplant care of patients with haematological disorders treated within GNCH.
Further responsibilities include the provision of bone marrow examinations, lumbar punctures and delivery of intrathecal chemotherapy.
On-call Duties:
* There is a ward attending system during working hours and an out of hours on-call rota (1 in 8).
* Duties will depend on the experience of the applicant.
Administrative:
* The appointee will be expected to take a normal role in management, administration and audit.
Research:
* Help and involvement in current research within paediatric haematology will be welcomed.
Teaching:
* Contribute to undergraduate teaching and to the higher specialist training of specialist registrars in haematology.
Person Specification
Education, Qualifications and Specialist Skills
* Primary Medical Qualification
* Full GMC Registration
* Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register (within 6 months from the date of the AAC)
* Special skills and training in Paediatric Haematology
* A minimum of 12 months' experience in paediatric haematology
* Minimum of 12 months' experience in general paediatrics
* Higher Degree
* FRCPath or equivalent
Clinical Experience
* Wide experience of clinical and laboratory haematology
* Specific experience and interest in Paediatric Haematology
* Ability to take independent responsibility for the clinical care of children with haematological illness
Management and Administration Experience
* Involvement with management and project leadership within the specialty
* Evidence of involvement in authoring or reviewing clinical guidelines
Teaching
* Experience of supervising junior medical staff
* Participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
Research
* Evidence of involvement in research methodology and publication of findings
Audit
* Evidence of participation in audit
