Act as a Medical Physics Expert (MPE) for an agreed range of modalities, provide advice on optimisation of equipment and technical factors for radiological procedures in conjunction with other Medical Physics Experts as appropriate. The post holder will review equipment test results and provide appropriate advice on the required actions. Act as an appointed Radiation Protection Adviser to MYTT providing expert advice to the Chief Executive, senior management and staff at all levels. The post holder will also provide expert advice to the Trust regarding the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017. Conduct surveys of radiation areas in order to assess and monitor levels of radiation exposure to staff, patients and visitors, reporting findings in writing and formulate measures for dose reduction and optimisation. Provide MPE advice to support compliance with the Ionising Radiation Medical Exposure Regulations 2017 (IRMER 17), e.g. undertake audits, support drafting and review of procedures, provide response to relevant clinical governance queries. Support the investigation of adverse events involving ionising radiation. Calculate dose and risk in the event of unnecessary, inadvertent or accidental irradiation or doses greater than intended. Liaise with specialist inspectors (CQC/HSE) for ionising radiations e.g. when supporting the investigations of incidents involving ionising radiation to both patients and staff. Contribute to the technical specification of interventional and other radiological equipment and provide specialist advice to senior managers and others for the procurement of high capital value complex clinical equipment. Provide expert advice on the design of new facilities and techniques where ionising radiations are used. In conjunction with other MPEs, provide the Employer with formal advice relating to compliance with the IRMER 17. Provide, on own authority, Radiation Protection Advice and Medical Physics Expertise the Trust, to ensure that we meet our statutory obligations. This involves dealing with a wide range of staff including senior Trust managers, radiology managers, consultant radiologists, and radiographers. The advice provided will cover such aspects as the design of x-ray facilities including the calculation of shielding requirements, optimisation of patient dose and clinical image quality, quality assurance of equipment and procedures, personal monitoring and measures for staff protection. Review and provide written reports to Radiation Safety Groups and Committees and employers on compliance with the Regulations. Prescribe, review and revise, the performance of the quality assurance programme for all equipment involved in the exposure of patients and staff to ionising radiation to ensure statutory compliance. This will include highly complex, patient critical equipment and involve high precision measurements. This will include (but not limited to): dental imaging equipment mammography equipment (as part of symptomatic and screening services) interventional radiology and cardiac catheterisation systems CT systems DR/CR and mobile imaging systems.
