EDF Trading is building a strategic valuation and position management system. This role is to drive the capture of requirements and lead the delivery teams of quants, developers, analysts and testers to implement an advanced valuation platform that will serve Front Office, Risk and Product Control to provide transparency of data and calculation across the business.
The valuation platform (Opera) is key to the aspirations of EDF Trading’s in house trading technology and the product owner will be instrumental to the delivery of this product.
Power and gas are unique in the granularity of position and risk. Different desk will need their trading positions calculated and shown in a variety of ways. Therefore experience with managing expectation of Front Office customers is essential.
The solution will be engineered in a separated manner utilising modern approaches where backend components are containerised and scalable. The successful candidate will need to have experience in migration journey from classical on prem solutions to hybrid infrastructures with implementation in both the cloud and on prem hardware. The ultimate solution is likely to be centred around a fast, responsive and flexible, bespoke user interface, augmented by reporting tools such as PowerBI and Excel to provide greater flexibility and analytical capabilities.
The candidate must have strong leadership skills and the drive to aid in the directional development of the strategic pricing platform. Key to the role is the ability to work with many stakeholders and help drive change.
Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities
* Manage product full lifecycle and product strategy for Quant Engineering group and deliver key product strategy for Opera and legacy FO tool (Encelade).
* Manage FO migration of Encelade suit to Opera, prioritize features accordingly between product sets.
* Create the product vision and be the product ‘champion’
* Identify and scope out user requirements and translate these into product backlog epics & features, ensuring that they align to business benefits/KPIs
* Ensure the product meets non-functional requirements including performance, security, scalability and including technical activities (e.g. technical debt, upgrades, architectural changes)
* Proactively seek technical guidance from the Design Lead and ensure the development follows the agreed approach and meets agreed standards
* Develop the product roadmap (including release schedule) & communicate this to the product team, project management and senior stakeholders
* Manage and prioritise the backlog, balancing strategic and tactical requirements
* Develop user stories ensuring they are clear & precise, have sufficient detail and the necessary acceptance criteria are included
* Sequence and schedule user stories
* Determine resource requirements and manage resource risks
* Manage the product development progress (monitoring, reporting, risks, issues) and ensure the product seamlessly moves through its lifecycle from development to support
* Approve iterations/products prior to release and ensure the appropriate level of testing is undertaken
* Define the product KPIs to define product success and monitor against these, addressing areas of concern e.g. low usage
* Communicate with stakeholders across EDFT, including the business and technical teams, ensuring they are given the context for all work, understand their roles & responsibilities and are kept updated on progress
* Work closely and collaboratively with key people in the Quant Engineering team (Design Lead, Encelade Team lead, Quant, developers, QA & testers) and Head of Projects and Enterprise Architect
* Support Project Manager in number of additional activities such as project resource planning, RAID Management and Project Steering and Governance
* Build and improve the product team identity, morale, performance and ways of working
Experience required
* 10+ years’ experience as a Product Owner/Manager is essential. The candidate must be able to interface between the business and the team to make decisions and facilitate the creation of an effective solution.
* The candidate must have strong leadership skills and a demonstrated “Product Ownership” track record forwarding the evolution of an in house development project.
* Knowledge of modern technology methods and the challenges of migration to them from legacy / older infrastructure.
* Must have specialist experience in quant development and related implementations and clear front office experience working with multiple stakeholders and interacting with traders.
* Experience working in a commodity trading environment. This is detailed as follows:
* Understanding of commodity market fundamentals, including trade instrument types and commodity specific nuances
* Knowledge of complex trade types in energy trading (Storage, Swing, PPA, … etc)
* Knowledge of derivative trading and usage of varying Greeks in P&L explain
* Understanding trade lifecycle of energy products (Power or gas) from P&L and Position point of view.
* Must be proficient in SQL
* Python scripting and visualisation tools (e.g. PowerBI) experience is desirable
* Extensive experience in functional analysis, design and implementation of software solutions in transaction, P&L/Pricing and risk management systems, working in a large-scale trading and risk environment is essential - preferably within an investment banking, commodities trading house, tier one ETRM software solution provider or energy consultancy.

* Ability to work directly with the business teams to define functional requirements and to communicate in a meaningful manner with different levels within the organisation (traders, risk managers, operations, department heads).
* Strong credible leader with an ability to challenge and broker agreements between technology teams and senior business stakeholders where conflicting prioritise arise.
* Ability to translate complex business requirements to solid functional specifications, whilst ensuring business context is fully understood. Must be attentive to detail with strong focus on accuracy of information.
* Ability to drive change to business practices by working effectively with all levels of users, looking to automate and streamline processes where possible, whilst retaining high levels of operational control.
* Ability to work closely with the EDFT technical development teams to help jointly define the optimum solutions. Must be able to communicate complex functional requirements and designs to technical staff.
* Ability to create and drive Product roadmap and execution against them. Provide high level reporting to senior stakeholders on target and delivery status.
* Highly motivated to complete projects and ‘go the extra mile’ to meet deadlines.
* Able to multi-task with minimal supervision.
Hours of work:
8.30am – 5.30pm, Monday to Friday however flexibility required.
Place of Work:
EDF Trading has a flexible office/remote working policy. This role requires a minimum of three days per week in our London office.
