Job summary
We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Band 3 MLA to join our team in the Microbiology department.
You will provide support to the current Reception and MLA team to ensure that a quality service is being provided.
Following an appropriate period of training, You will be required to undertake participation in the weekend rotas ( one in four where possible after training). You will be supported with training as required for the post and will be part of a support team and required to maintain competency in all relevant areas of the laboratory.

Main duties of the job
Microbiology at Broomfield Hospital is a friendly department that incorporates Bacteriology, Serology (including Molecular and Virology) departments and sample reception. The department provides analytical services for the Mid Essex Trust, St Andrews Burns Unit and other NHS & non-NHS providers. WinPath Enterprise is the laboratory computer system in use.
You will provide support to the current Reception and MLA team to ensure that a quality service is being provided.
A full time employee is preferable, we have modern equipment that includes the following: Sysmex 5000 Urine analyser, two Hologic Panthers, four GeneXpert PCR machines running a number of parameters as well as Two Diasorin Liaison XL machines used for both Virology/ Serology with H. pylori testing. We also have open platform PCR testing capability available which has samples prepared by the MLA team members for these automated machines.
There is a strong training ethos in the department and we have a two Training Leads in post across Microbiology to support development needs. The department regularly hold lunchtime seminars and training sessions.

1. To assist in reception of specimens and prepare for analysis.
2. To select test profiles according to agreed protocols for specimen type and clinical details.
3. To perform microbiological cultures according to the testing selected.
4. To assist BMS staff with simple tests, assays and the operation of automated instruments following standard operational procedures
5. To separate and prepare specimens for referral by post to a reference laboratory
6. To dilute culture suspensions, inoculate culture media and add antibiotic discs for antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
7. To receive requests for information and respond appropriately.
8. To store processed specimens and assist in retrieval as necessary
9. To assist with laboratory stores and maintenance of consumable stocks including doing pre acceptance testing.
10. To monitor, maintain and clean equipment.
11. To suggest ways to improve working practices
12. To perform any other duties, commensurate with the grade and in the interest of the service and to attend MLA meetings with the Band 4 AP staff who support the MLA staff across the department.
