East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust
We are excited to offer an opportunity to join the Lung Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist Team at Colchester Hospital. As an experienced Clinical Nurse Specialist, you will provide expert care and support to patients from referral in on a Target 2 week wait pathway for suspected lung cancer, through investigations, diagnosis, onward treatment, follow-up, and to end of life. You will play a key role in the multidisciplinary team and act as a central point of contact and support for the patient, their family, and the wider team. Our goal is to improve patient pathways and experiences, offering exceptional advice and support to each individual and their family.
The Team liaises with other hospitals in the region, so organization and keeping updated with patients' cancer journey is imperative. You will work autonomously and as part of the wider team, have exceptional communication skills, and a motivation to provide outstanding, person-centred, holistic care. Ideally, you will have post-registration experience within Respiratory & Oncology services, including knowledge of oncology treatments. You must be compassionate and caring and be willing to work hard as part of the existing Lung Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist team.
Main duties of the job
Support the patients fully with the pre-diagnosis pathway to ensure that the tests are carried out in a timely manner and that the patients are fully informed of the tests needed. This will assist with achieving the 28-day standard, which will then lead into the anticipated compliance with the 62-day standard.
* Calling appropriately vetted patients after CT scan to explain the initial findings and arrange either a PET or a circulating tumour DNA blood test.
* Assisting with the taking of blood where this can't be supported by other means.
* Calling patients post-MDT discussion to reassure them about negative results.
* Supporting patients attending "straight to test" in the Pleural Clinic - this will improve patient experience and allow "straight to test" patients to get their results quicker. Due to the pleural clinic becoming larger, these patients are increasing but do not routinely see a specialist nurse until the point of histological diagnosis.
