THE ROLE
We’re looking for a Lawyer to join our Information Rights team, based in our London W1 office.
We are seeking a lawyer ideally with some experience in information rights law; principally under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 but also data protection law. You will report to the Senior Head of Compliance in the Information Rights Team and work with lawyers and advisors across the team.
The BBC Legal Division is responsible for providing legal advice and assistance across the BBC and for developing and implementing the BBC’s legal strategy. The Legal Division is led by the BBC’s General Counsel. It is made up of the following departments: General Counsel's Office, Litigation and Information Rights, Intellectual Property, Employment, Programme Legal Advice, Commercial and Competition and Regulatory Law.
Our overall structure is similar to that found in private practice firms and we support on a wide range of diverse matters. Whilst this means the work can be challenging and relatively fast-paced at times, we are open to discussing agile ways of working to support our staff, where appropriate and in line with our flexible working policies.
Main Responsibilities
You’ll be involved in all aspects of information rights law including complex freedom of information requests, review and quality control of straightforward requests, internal reviews, and working on Information Commissioner and Tribunal cases. You’ll also work on complex individual subject access requests and support work on subject access requests. You’ll also be expected to undertake independent legal research and support other aspects of the wider Legal Division’s work, particularly with information rights law compliance.
Are you the right candidate?
A qualified lawyer or legal executive, ideally with some experience within a legal or compliance related role. You’ll possess some knowledge of FOIA and have some experience of GDPR, DPA and privacy law issues.
In addition, you will have strong analytical skills and be a good communicator, with experience of building relationships across a range of people and within a team. You'll have excellent written and oral communication skills and experience of advising clients directly, in person, on the telephone and in writing. Knowledge of the structure, objectives and values of the BBC and broadcasting issues generally is desirable. A familiarity with a variety of online legal databases and experience of undertaking legal research is essential.

Location: London based with some hybrid-working
Salary: £60,000 to £70,000pa, dependent upon experience
