Principal Linac Engineer - Medical Physics
Work within a team to keep the linear accelerator treatment machines and other radiotherapy equipment operational, maintained, repaired and safe. Assist with their installation, commissioning, QA and development.
Design innovative equipment and provide specialist advice. Participate in the team which maintains the IT networks between the treatment facilities.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.
Main duties of the job
The post holder works in the team to keep the linear accelerator treatment machines and other radiotherapy equipment operational, maintained, repaired and safe. This includes designing innovative equipment and providing specialist advice. They will also participate in the team which maintains the IT networks between the treatment facilities, essential for the effective treatment of cancer patients.
Medical Physics provides all the background scientific and technical data, advice and expertise to the radiotherapy and physics departments for the treatment machines, computer systems and specialized devices. This is fundamental for patient doses to be prescribed and given correctly, safe operation of equipment and staff protection from X-Rays. It includes specifications for the equipment, calibration and QA, repair & maintenance, data networking and computer control, and individualized patient dose computations.
Its expert sections include mechanical engineering, machine maintenance & repair, brachytherapy, computing & electronics, treatment planning, dosimetry, training & teaching, and R&D. It also provides a full Radiation Protection service to all X-Ray users in SE Wales.

Job responsibilities
1. Participate in providing planned and emergency maintenance and repair of highly complex treatment systems.
2. Advise on the safe working condition and alignment of clinical treatment machines.
3. Assist in the system management of the radiotherapy treatment computer systems.
4. Undertake Quality Assurance regimes on treatment machines according to local protocol.
5. Undertake specific Research and Development Projects and help instigate changes of practice which result from these.
6. Assist with the commissioning of treatment machines as required.
Person Specification
Experience
* Experience at Band 6 level in linear accelerator maintenance.
* Experience of maintaining the full range of Treatment Machines and Radiation Physics Equipment at this Centre. Awareness of the Centre's and Physics' procedures.
Skills and Attributes
* Good communicator of difficult technical issues to scientists and non-scientists with good verbal and written skills.
* Wide range of engineering experience in radiotherapy equipment with the ability to fault find to component level.
Qualifications and Knowledge
* BSc or Equivalent in Electrical & Electronic Engineering or HND/C in the same field with demonstrable experience.
* A number of Manufacturers' advanced training courses.
* Specialist Knowledge gained through experience and training in this field.
* High voltage systems and safe working practices.
* MSc - In an appropriate subject.
