As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
* Assisting in Cable Installation:
Work alongside senior technicians to install various types of network cabling, such as Cat 5e, Cat 6, fibre optic, and coaxial cables. Assist with routing and securing cables in walls, ceilings, and floors while adhering to network installation standards.
* Site Preparation and Setup:
Help prepare work sites by measuring, cutting, and organising cable runs. Assist with mounting cable trays, installing containment, and securing hardware like patch panels, routers, and switches.
* Testing & Troubleshooting:
Learn to use cable testing and troubleshooting tools (e.g., cable testers, tone generators) to ensure proper functionality of installed systems. Gain experience in diagnosing and resolving issues related to signal loss, miswiring, or performance problems.
* Blueprints & Schematics:
Work with experienced installers to interpret and apply wiring diagrams and floor plans to guide cable placement and system design.
* Safety & Compliance:
Ensure all installations meet safety standards and local building codes. Always follow safety procedures, including using personal protective equipment (PPE) and maintaining a safe work environment.
* Customer Interaction:
While under supervision, interact with clients to provide updates and answer questions. Ensure client properties are respected and kept clean throughout the installation process.
* Ongoing Learning:
Participate in both on-the-job training and formal classroom education as part of the apprenticeship program. Apply lessons learnt in the classroom to real-world scenarios in the field.
* Documentation & Reporting:
Help maintain accurate records of installations, including cable routes, test results, and any issues encountered during the job. Report progress to the project manager and track learning milestones.

* Install copper cabling components for Local Area Networking (LAN). Carry out maintenance tasks on copper cable networks. Identify, locate and repair common faults.
* Install fibre optic cabling components for Local Area Networking LAN and Wide Area Network WAN infrastructure. Identify, locate and repair common faults.
* Conduct testing on copper cabling in accordance with equipment manufacturer's procedures, compliant to industry standards, interpret results and rectify failures.
* Carry out testing of fibre optic cabling using an optical loss test set, Tier 1 and fibre inspection tool in accordance with equipment manufacturer’s procedures, and compliant to industry standards.
* Analyse copper and fibre test results and provides certification to the customer.
* Prepare, constructs and installs telecommunications equipment cabinets, either pre-built or from flat-pack. Arrange and install fixtures and fittings for the intended use. Selects network equipment components for installation into cabinets, differentiating between switches and routers.
* Work at height in a safe manner.
* Work in confined spaces by implementing health and safety procedures, using and maintaining personal protective equipment.
* Apply health and safety working practices to keep themselves and others safe.
* Analyse plans, make decisions about equipment types and quantity, and predict time frames.
* Assess the requirements for cable containment by type and size to build a pathway suitable for routing data cables. Install containment systems, using tools and methods for cutting, shaping and mounting tray, basket trunking and conduit.
* Install end-point equipment using fixings and media.
* Interpret the customer statement of requirements to determine the quantity and quality of components to be used in the cable network.
* Quantify equipment requirements and timelines for tasks to be carried out.
* Communicate with key stakeholders in the customer's organisation including the customer, the construction design and management CDM co-ordinator, the project manager and the information technology IT security officer.
* Maintain cyber security, applying processes and procedures aimed at protecting data confidentiality.

Other requirements
The position will involve working at various job sites, including residential, commercial, and industrial locations. Some work may be performed at heights or in confined spaces such as attics, crawl spaces, and under floors. Flexible working hours that align with the college apprenticeship program, with potential for overtime based on project requirements. Sometimes there will be travel to Scotland and overnight stays - some candidates might not be okay with this that's all but as some of the work is in Scotland, overnight stays are inevitable at times.
