An exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint 1.0 WTE Trainee Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner to undertake the funded MSc Advanced Practice (Neonates) course commencing at Salford University in January 2025 (N.B. the start date of the programme may be subject to change and should be confirmed by the University by September/October 2024).

Entry requirements are:
* minimum of a 2:1 degree in a related subject (usually nursing)
* Significant years' experience within the neonatal field
* Current NMC registration
* QIS/ENB405
Students who do not meet these requirements (2:1 + substantial year's experience) will be considered for entry/accepted onto the programme via the Accreditation of Prior Experience and Learning (APEL) process and may be required to submit additional evidence to demonstrate capability to study at level 7. Dependent on qualifications students may also be required to submit a professional portfolio to evidence capabilities e.g. audits, leadership projects etc.).
Main duties of the job
The Trainee Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (ANNP) will work within the multidisciplinary team working towards becoming competent at undertaking advanced autonomous clinical practice in order to provide expert clinical care and management for infants and their families admitted to the Neonatal Unit in accordance with unit guidelines and protocols.
The Trainee ANNP although clinical approximately 80% of the time, also has a senior clinical leadership role within the Directorate, striving to constantly improve neonatal nursing care on the ward through developing new initiatives, undertaking audit and an active role in education, mentorship and supervision.
The post holder will work closely with the Matron and Directorate Manager, Paediatrics and the neonatal team to ensure both the Directorate's local governance agenda, including the review and development of neonatal clinical guidelines, and the national agenda for nursing and neonates is fully met.
Job responsibilities
The Trainee Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner is an experienced Neonatal Intensive Care Nurse who prior to the commencement in post will be competent in some aspects of the clinical and professional duties.
1. Attends high-risk deliveries for the resuscitation, stabilisation and safe transfer of newborn infants.
2. Under supervision until deemed clinically competent carries out assessment of infants on the postnatal wards, including first medical examination. Refers to appropriate specialists, admits to NNU and/or discharges from hospital. Performs formal discharge examinations and determines whether a baby is fit for discharge.
3. Uses specialised clinical and theoretical knowledge to assess the health status of the baby by medical, psychosocial and clinical examination.
4. Plans and implements individual management and care plans in collaboration with nursing, medical and other healthcare professionals involved in the care of the neonate.
5. Under supervision initiates treatment, including drug therapy and intravenous fluids and parenteral nutrition, in accordance with agreed guidelines.
6. Initiation and subsequent management of mechanical ventilation, monitoring blood gases and alteration of ventilator settings accordingly.
7. Obtain, interpret and monitor laboratory investigations with the appropriate response.
8. Request, interpret and respond to other investigations such as x-rays, ECGs, ultrasound scans and blood tests.
9. To ensure that reassessment of nursing, medical and psychosocial needs are evaluated, progress notes are kept and revision of management is instituted where appropriate.
10. Provide counselling and support for parents whose children are receiving intensive care.
11. To develop and maintain effective communication with parents and act as a liaison between parents and healthcare professionals.
12. Develop and maintain nursing information systems and ensure that written documentation is kept in respect of investigations and incidents.
13. To promote professionalism in nursing, ensure the rights, dignity and confidentiality of patients, relatives and staff are protected at all times.
14. Undertakes under supervision where not deemed competent the necessary diagnostic and therapeutic procedures within the unit protocols.

Qualifications
* RN Child RN Adult or RM with significant neonatal nursing experience
* Current NMC Registration
* Neonatal Qualification in Speciality
* Working towards completion of MSc Advanced Practice (Neonatal) (Master's Degree level) (Annex 21)
* NLS certified
* Working towards Independent Nurse Prescriber (Annex 21)
* BSc (preferably in nursing)
* NLS instructor
