The Role
We are seeking a skilled 1:1 Teaching Assistant to work with a young child who is non-verbal, uses Makaton, and requires support with intimate care and PICA management. This role is part-time initially, with the potential to become full-time in the near future.
This is a highly rewarding opportunity to support a young learner in their early education, helping them to engage with learning, develop communication skills, and ensure their well-being and safety throughout the school day.
As a 1:1 Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with the child, providing tailored support to meet their individual needs. You will collaborate with the class teacher and SENDCo to implement learning strategies, communication methods, and safety measures, ensuring the child thrives in a structured and nurturing environment.
Main Responsibilities
* Provide 1:1 support throughout the school day, ensuring engagement and well-being.
* Use Makaton and other communication strategies to aid understanding and expression.
* Support with intimate care needs, ensuring dignity and comfort.
* Manage PICA behaviours, implementing safety measures to minimise risk. Encourage independence and engagement in classroom activities.
Essential Criteria
* Experience working with young children, particularly those with SEND and communication difficulties.
* Knowledge and experience using Makaton or other communication aids.
* Comfortable providing intimate care and supporting personal needs.
* Awareness and understanding of PICA and strategies to manage it safely.
* Patience, empathy, and the ability to build a trusting relationship.
* Strong collaboration and communication skills.
Desirable Criteria
* Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent.
* Previous experience working in an Early Years or with young children

Vetting: Five Education is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all the staff we employ to share this commitment. Successful applicants will be required to undergo checks including reference checks and TRA checks. Applicants who do not have a non-voluntary enhanced DBS on the update service, will need to process a new one at a cost of £62.70. This will be refunded after 20 days of work and the DBS has been registered on the update service.
