Barking and Dagenham school nursing service provides the National Measurement Programme for all reception and year 6 children within the borough.
Barking and Dagenham have one of the highest rates within the UK for children identified as obese.
This new role has been developed in partnership with LBBD public health to provide early support including nutrition and physical advice to children and their families where the children have been identified as overweight or obese.
We are looking for a motivated individual who has a wide experience of providing support and advice to support nutrition and growth through healthy eating and physical health with skills and knowledge about psychological and behaviour change. We are looking for someone who has a Diploma qualification or equivalent in Public Health, Nutrition, Physical activity and has experience of working with children and young people between ages of 5 - 18 years old.
Main duties of the job
1. To work in partnership with School nurses, healthy schools, voluntary services and early help in supporting children with nutritional support and guidance to families to help improve healthy eating.
2. Support children 1:1 in nutrition advice and encourage physical activity.
3. Provide hints and tips to families and carers on healthy family meals and snacks.
4. Linking in with wider LBBD support systems in supporting healthy activities in children and young people, including the Healthy Schools team.
5. Having a positive effect on children’s physical and mental health.
6. Working with School Nurses and schools to identify where health inequalities are impacting on children’s nutrition that will then support programmes of service to target most vulnerable areas.

Starting with NELFT
NELFT places a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust. All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will include mandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment. As part of the process new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior managers and attend a number of drop-in sessions focusing on engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes. The induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.
Probationary Period
This post will be subject to a probationary period. Internal applicants are exempt from the probationary period (unless you are an internal applicant currently partway through a probationary period or currently a bank member of staff).
High Cost Area Supplement - London
This post attracts payment for High Cost Area Supplement of 15% of the basic salary (minimum payment of £4,551 and a maximum payment of £5,735 per annum pro rata).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. Identification of children who are above 98th centile through the National height and weight Measurement programme.
2. To work with children that have been identified through School Nursing and education as being overweight and in need of support.
3. Provide health advice through school assemblies or through the public health lessons provided in schools.
4. To support the school nursing service in providing evidenced-based initiatives that can support children.
5. To work in partnership with our early emotional health and well-being teams to help support children’s emotional needs.
6. Provide bespoke support for children and their families across living or in education settings Barking and Dagenham, you must be able to travel and provide services in a variety of venues.
7. Collation of baseline data for specific cohort of children.
8. Provide case load studies for commissioners demonstrating activities that have been able to support children and young people.
9. Work effectively with partners within the wider 0-19 team and colleagues from the local authority in reflecting, evaluating and analysing the effectiveness of interventions for system-wide learning.

Person specification
Experience
* Experience of working with children and young people to support nutrition and healthy living.
* Qualification in training or group facilitation.
Training
* Diploma / level 3 children youth work.
* Diploma Nutrition or physical activity.

* Understanding / experience of data collection techniques for targeted interventions for children and young people.
Communication
