The Fleet Services Team where the apprenticeship would be based undertakes an essential role to ensure a safe and legal operation of the Council’s fleet and the workforce driving on behalf of the organisation. This assists in ensuring that the Council is able to fulfil its legal and moral obligations with respect to the provision of a wide range of statutory services. The Team is responsible for a mixed fleet of approximately 500 vehicles including waste and recycling, street scene, pool cars, gritters, tipper trucks, coaches, minibuses, library vans and fire appliances. The Team also maintains in excess of 1,000 items of plant including trailers, mowers and other power tools. On average, over 7,700 maintenance jobs are undertaken per annum, planned and unplanned.
The Team is also responsible for the provision of a fleet management service including the procurement of bulk fuel, fuel cards, the provision of vehicle telematics, administration of the pool cars scheme, vehicle insurance and taxing, and support with procurement exercises. In addition, the Team fulfils a fleet compliance function to ensure that the Council’s vehicles and drivers are compliant with the relevant legislation and guidance.
We are looking to recruit enthusiastic individuals with a passion for vehicles, who are looking to complete a level three heavy goods vehicle technician apprenticeship with Westmorland and Furness Council. These postholders will be trained in all aspects of vehicle maintenance benefiting from high-quality training and development opportunities, personalised support from managers and mentors, and the chance to work alongside skilled and experienced staff. They will also be a key part in the delivery of the organisation’s ambitions, with opportunities to become a permanent member of the fleet services team, upon successful completion of the course having gained valuable job-specific knowledge and transferable skills, setting you up for a successful and rewarding career.
Who we are looking for…
We are looking for enthusiastic and self-motivated individuals to join our team as apprentices. The ideal candidate will have a good standard of English, Maths, and ICT, and a strong willingness to learn and grow. This should include a minimum of 5 x GCSE at Grade C / 4 or above (or equivalent) including Maths and English Language. You should be a team player with excellent communication, organisation, and time management skills, as well as a keen eye for detail and a positive, flexible attitude.
