We are looking for an experienced journalist to join our award winning team at the Mirror, covering our exciting overnight operation as our new Deputy Overnight News Editor.
This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced and highly skilled journalist to both report and edit news content, supporting the Overnight News Editor in overseeing all news content on the site during crucial overnight hours.
We’re looking for fresh ideas and new perspectives from people from a wide range of backgrounds so we can continue to diversify our content.
This role is home and hub based, linked to our Canary Wharf Hub. We are ideally looking for candidates based in or around London, but we are also open to a fully remote role for candidates based anywhere in the UK.
Job Description
What will the role involve?
You will oversee the curation and amplification of high-quality digital content for the Mirror during overnight shifts. You will ensure that all content is engaging, accurate, and aligned with both editorial standards and audience expectations. Collaborating closely with section editors, you will develop and execute content strategies designed to drive traffic and enhance engagement, while providing guidance and feedback to maintain high editorial standards.
You will assist in developing and implementing the online editorial strategy, with a focus on growth, innovation, and audience engagement. In the absence of the Overnight News Editor, you will deputise by leading nightly editorial meetings, setting content priorities, and assigning tasks to the team. You will monitor breaking news and maintain timely and comprehensive coverage throughout the night.
You will take on reporting duties, actively covering breaking news stories at pace and handling editing shifts during weekends. You will assist in developing and implementing the online editorial strategy, with a focus on growth, innovation, and audience engagement. You will analyse web traffic and user engagement metrics integrating new tools and technologies and continuously improving our coverage.
This role involves working Wednesday to Sunday, 11pm - 7am shifts.
Qualifications
Who are we looking for?
You are an experienced journalist with an NCTJ or equivalent journalism qualification and in depth knowledge of media law. You have a strong track record of reporting and ideally editing, breaking news content in a fast paced national or large regional newsroom environment.
You may be a proven Assistant or Deputy Editor looking for a new challenge or change in working hours, or an ambitious senior news reporter ready to take the next step in your career. You have first rate editing, writing and subbing skills and relish the test of working under pressure and to tight deadlines. You’re social media savvy with current SEO knowledge and a bursting book of industry contacts. You’re flexible, inquisitive and have a keen eye for what makes a great story.
