ABOUT LGC NATIONAL LABORATORIES:
Under contract to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), LGC hosts and operates the UK’s combined Official Medicines Control Laboratory (OMCL) for chemical testing and the British Pharmacopoeia (BP) Commission Laboratory.
The work of The MHRA Laboratories at LGC helps the MHRA protect public health by ensuring that medicines and healthcare products are safe for those who use them. The laboratories are operated under a Government Owned, Contractor Operated (GOCO) model at our site in Teddington.
One of The MHRA Laboratory's primary roles is to procure, establish and maintain reference standards (British Pharmacopoeia Chemical Reference Substances - BPCRS). The laboratory also supports the work of the British Pharmacopoeia Commission in establishing methods (known as monographs) for generic medicinal products (including herbals) available in the UK. The monographs established by laboratory staff are subsequently published in the British Pharmacopoeia.
In regards to the location of the role, you will initially be based at the Teddington site. However, the Company will be permanently relocate its National Laboratories, Teddington operations which includes the MHRA Laboratories, to The Priestley Centre, Surrey Research Park, Guildford in the Spring of 2025. Job Description
We're looking for a Lead Analytical Chemist to join our team!
The role is to support undertaking of chemical testing studies and method development and validation within the Office of The Government Chemist. The individual will support the Team Leader to maintain the standards encouraged from the Government Chemist function, through participation in proficiency testing schemes, continuous improvement projects and an understanding of customer requirements.
The successful candidate will be a well-organised, self-motivated worker with a high degree of tenacity for solving technical problems and carry out basic instrumental trouble shooting. You'll be a consummate professional, positive role model, good communicator, a mentor and a prospective leader, good attention to detail and keep meticulous records of analytical work. You should have the ability to question and improve upon current processes within the laboratory.
Responsibilities
* Ensure delivery of contracted work to the required quality and customer expectation.
* Act as a point of reference for advice training and mentorship to Analytical Chemists.
* Undertake laboratory analysis of samples to support all work streams.
* Lead projects to develop and implement methods and equipment.
* Ensure accurate record keeping and report writing.
* Liaise with the customer to update on progress, plan work and provide advice and mentorship as the need arises.
* Provide representation at customer meetings.
* Contribute towards the maintenance and development of quality systems.
* Work on projects within the broader team and put forward ideas to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, improve quality of laboratory operations, collaborating with departments.
Qualifications
* Chemistry degree or equivalent experience, coupled with experience in HPLC. Other techniques such as GC, ICP, hyphenated techniques, UV spectrometry, and titration, are desirable.
* Practical experience in working within an ISO/IEC 17025 laboratory environment is important.
* Have experience reviewing data and recommend a suitable course of action where results do not meet required specifications (including quality control).
* Prior experience of staff supervision is required.
