Lower Barn Farm is a leading provider of landscaping materials, stone masonry services, fireplaces, and heating solutions. With a strong reputation for quality and customer service, we are now looking for an experienced Head of Operations to help streamline our processes and drive business growth.
Role Overview
As Head of Operations, you will be responsible for overseeing and optimising all operational aspects of the business. You will implement structured processes, enhance efficiency, and provide leadership across stock control, logistics, and team management. This role requires a hands-on leader who can take ownership of operations and ensure smooth day-to-day running.
Key Responsibilities
1. Stock Management & Inventory Control
o Oversee weekly, monthly, and yearly stock takes, ensuring accuracy and minimising discrepancies.
o Implement independent stock checks to maintain clear oversight and control.
o Ensure clear stock ownership in designated zones, tracking stock movements, breakages, and cutting.
o Improve and enforce Orderwise usage for stock control and order management.
2. Buying & Supplier Management
o Oversee and optimize the buying process to ensure stock availability while managing costs efficiently.
o Work with suppliers to negotiate pricing, terms, and lead times for key materials.
o Monitor inventory levels to prevent overstocking or stock shortages, ensuring smooth operations.
o Ensure all operational purchases (packaging, tools, transport supplies) are cost-effective and well-managed.
3. Logistics & Transport Efficiency
o Ensure all outgoing loads are checked against tickets and only dispatched if fully paid.
o Conduct spot checks on drivers and enforce best practices in vehicle maintenance and cleanliness.
o Identify cost-saving opportunities in transport, packaging, and tools to increase operational efficiency.
4. Operational Efficiency & Business Process Optimisation
o Work with the MD to set and monitor KPIs, ensuring operational performance aligns with business growth and profitability objectives.
o Develop and enforce clear processes to ensure smooth and cost-effective operations.
o Address inefficiencies in workflows, tools, and transport to improve productivity and profitability.
o Ensure that drivers and yard staff operate with discipline, maintaining order and accountability.
o Work closely with the Sales Manager to review the customer experience, identifying operational improvements that enhance service, delivery times, and overall customer satisfaction.
5. Leadership & Team Management
o Act as the authority figure in the yard, ensuring staff follow procedures and work efficiently.
o Implement a clear structure of responsibility and accountability within the team.
o Manage and monitor overtime hours to ensure cost-effective staffing.
o Improve team culture by fostering discipline, ownership, and proactive problem-solving.
6. Customer & Site Security
o Ensure the shop and site remain secure, preventing unauthorized customer access when unattended.
o Implement customer service protocols to maintain professionalism even in self-service scenarios.
What We’re Looking For
️ Proven experience in operations management, logistics, or stock control, preferably within construction, landscaping, or manufacturing.
️ Strong leadership skills – able to enforce discipline, set expectations, and drive accountability.
️ Experience in cost-saving initiatives, process optimisation, and workforce efficiency.
️ Understanding of inventory systems (Orderwise or similar) and operational best practices.
️ Hands-on, proactive, and problem-solving mindset with excellent attention to detail.
️ Knowledge of vehicle maintenance and transport management is a plus.
️ A balance between strategic oversight and on-the-ground leadership.
