Job Description
Our client based in the Portsmouth area is a company who specialise in engineering innovation in the Marine sector. They are looking for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join their team and be at the forefront of this industry leading technology. This senior role will be instrumental to the design of current and exciting future projects, working alongside industry leading experts to take ownership of mechanical systems, from concept through to production.
Responsibilities:
1. Working within an integrated, multi-disciplinary design and development team to generate design concepts through to production, ensuring that proposed design solutions meet all project requirements for function, quality, timing and cost.
2. Working on a variety of projects, anything from 40m fabricated structures for series production, to a one-off prototype for a small foiling vessel.
3. Take a key role within a large programme or lead a smaller project, working closely with the technical lead engineer.
4. Taking responsibility to deliver the design of components and systems meeting the company processes and standards.
5. Contribute to the continual improvement and development of methodologies and toolsets to enhance our processes and techniques to stay at the forefront of innovation.
6. Support pre-contract and concept generation, through feasibility, to support early-stage planning and requirements generation.
7. Lead and develop junior team members.
8. Completing hand calculations for mechanical fixings, inserts and bonded joints.
9. Technical liaison with customers, suppliers, manufacturing, and internal stakeholders.
10. Support business development activities and creation of customer proposals.
11. Support project management activities and monitor project plans and progress.
12. Balancing multiple concurrent projects, understand your working priorities and clearly show progress, delivery status, and key risks and issues.
13. Supporting with physical build, evaluation, and validation.
14. Supporting the compilation of DFMEA’s.
15. Management of external resource in conjunction with line manager.
They are looking for:
1. A degree in mechanical, automotive, marine or aerospace engineering.
2. Extensive experience in the use of a major CAD system (NX ideally) to produce detailed drawings to a high standard with the correct application of GD&T and DFM as necessary.
3. Excellent understanding of mechanical engineering principles, and application through use of design calculations.
4. Experience in designing both metallic and composite components would be ideal.
5. Excellent understanding of materials, welding, bonding, and fastening techniques.
6. Some familiarity of hands-on workshop activities like fabrication, CNC machining would be desirable.
7. Extensive experience with classical hand calculations and creating own calculation sheets.
8. Experience in the use of FEA tools to accelerate development and support with validation of the design would be preferable.
9. A working knowledge of TeamCentre and Siemens SimCentre would be advantageous.
10. Understanding of production manufacturing techniques would be desirable.
11. Ability to coach and supervise more junior engineers, and to delegate as appropriate.
12. Must be able to work within a close-knit team taking and giving instruction as appropriate.
13. Project management experience would be an advantage.
14. Committed to taking ownership of allocated tasks and determined to achieve challenging tasks and be self-motivated.
15. Attention to detail, be accurate at all times, and apply appropriate validation techniques.
