Hours of work: 40 hours per week on a rota basis
Salary: £35,000 per annum
The National Zoological Society of Wales (NZSW) known as the Welsh Mountain Zoo, is seeking a dedicated and experienced Head of Animals Manager to provide professional leadership and effective management of the animal care team. The role will be responsible for driving standards and compliance of the animal department, supporting the charities conservation mission and contributing to the development and financial success of the charity.
Key Responsibilities:
* Manage and coordinate the day-to-day operations of the animal department, including managing animal care, welfare, and enrichment.
* Team leadership and management of the animal care department - Strong leadership and oversight of the animal care team.
* Animal care, welfare and husbandry oversight – Ensure the highest standard of care and welfare are achieved across all taxa, within the framework of the Five Domains, membership requirements and species-specific guidelines.
* Compliance and health and safety – Oversee development, implementation, and monitor compliance of institutional and statutory health and safety policies, RAs and SWPs across the department.
* Strategic planning and development - Contribute to and support the zoo’s strategic goals, ensuring alignment with conservation, education, welfare, and operational priorities.
* Budgeting and resource management - Manage budgets and oversee procurement for the husbandry team, ensuring efficient use of resources to meet operational and strategic goals.
* Work with the Director of Living Collections to plan and implement animal-related projects and improvements.
Requirements:
* Minimum of 3 years leadership experience working in a BIAZA/EAZA accredited zoo, wildlife park
* Minimum Level 6 qualification in a relevant subject
* Experience of husbandry across a wide range of taxa
* Experienced in organising and completing animal transfers outside of the UK
* Knowledge and understanding of all statutory and membership requirements of operating a modern zoo
* Experience of managing departmental budgets
* Experienced in the use of Species360 and Microsoft Office applications
* Firearms certificate
* Participation with species management within EAZA
