Primary Function: The Senior Nurse Director in the Emergency Department (ED) reports directly to the Associate Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO) and has a collaborative relationship with the Senior Vice President Patient Care Services & Chief Nursing Officer (CNO). The Senior Nurse Director of the ED is responsible for the planning of clinical operations to assure efficient, excellent and appropriate delivery of care to the ED’s specific patient population. The Senior Nurse Director will adhere to organizational philosophies and assure that quality care is delivered in a cost-effective manner. Provides overall administrative direction and leadership for clinical staff, policies, procedures, and programs for the unit and will be responsible for the clinical care delivery.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Leads, innovates and directs all activities of the department by providing leadership and serving as a resource to follow through on issues, evaluates, and identifies a plan for problem solving.
Conducts formal and informal meetings to communicate ongoing goals, objectives, progress, and related management information and for collaborative planning to meet the goals of the department.
Maintains interface with leadership to coordinate clinical operational activities to ensure adequate staffing.
Identifies and collaborates with ED educator regarding staff educational needs. Assures that there are appropriate competencies to assure staff educational needs are met. Coordinates with the Department of Professional Development to provide regular geriatric focused training and educational opportunities.
Direct personnel actions related to areas of responsibility including, but not limited to hiring, performance management, staff development, staff retention, staff recognition, and corrective action, etc.
Assist in the development and communicate vision for care delivery models and facilitate ongoing refinement of such models.
Ensure safe environment of care for all staff, patients, and families. Ensure compliance with regulatory agencies, staff competence, licensure, and continuing education requirements.
Coordinate the resource needs for areas of responsibility, including reviewing and approving budgetary recommendations, and preparing variance analyses of budgeted revenues and expenses for areas of responsibility.
Facilitates and evaluates inter-shift communication and cooperation. Plans and meet routinely with ACNO and periodically with the Senior Vice President Patient Care Services & CNO for the purpose of setting unit goals and objectives.
Develops a Performance Improvement Program to monitor the quality and effectiveness of care delivered in the department. Assures the Joint Commission standards are met. Collaborates with ACNO, Chief of the ED and other members of the interdisciplinary team to achieve the targets for the Quality Dashboard as set by the Board of Directors.
In collaboration with others in administrative leadership, develop strategic and operational plan for clinical areas. Communicate plans and continuously evaluate plans.
Guides, leads and mentors leaders who directly report to the Senior Nurse Director.
In collaboration with the geriatric Emergency Department physician champion, implements initiatives related to the care of geriatric Emergency Department patients. Builds a culture of geriatric centric care within the department. Works with the ED multi-disciplinary team to build, formalize and implement workflows consistent with the principles of geriatric care.
Performs all other related duties as assigned including having accountability to the unit 24/7.
Job Qualifications and Specifications:
BSN required. Master’s degree in Nursing and or another related field required. RI State Nursing Licensure required as is graduation from an accredited nursing program. A minimum of five year’s job-related experience is required; ten years of job-related experience preferred. Certification in administration or related specialty is preferred and required within two years of hire. Maintains an ENA membership.
