This is a full-time permanent post at Darlington Memorial Hospital (DMH) in our very busy Department of Blood Sciences which processes 1500-2000 samples per site each day and is UKAS accredited.
Nominal Base will be DMH but you will be expected to travel to and work at the other hospital sites within the Trust including Durham (UHND), Bishop Auckland (BAH) and Shotley Bridge (SBH) as required.
We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our friendly, dedicated team of professionals as a Band 7 Senior Biomedical Scientist - Team Manager in Blood Transfusion. You must be able to demonstrate higher specialist knowledge in Blood Transfusion at both a technical and theoretical level and also preferably have broad experience in Haematology and Coagulation at specialist level.
You will be a proactive member of the Blood Sciences Team and Trust Transfusion Team; excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential as is the ability to work within a team processing a high workload of specimens. You should have great multi-tasking ability, excellent organisational skills, attention to detail, and be able to appropriately prioritise urgent work.
Main duties of the job
The candidate will be a Team Leader in Blood Transfusion and may assist in a team leader capacity in Haematology and Blood Sciences as needed.
They will organise the day-to-day staffing and duties to ensure a quality service is provided and turnaround times met.
They will liaise with the rest of the Transfusion Team, Band 7 at UHND, Transfusion Quality Coordinator, Transfusion Practitioner, ATPs, and the Manager responsible for Transfusion. Liaison with Pathology IT and Quality teams including the Pathology training lead is essential.
Attend meetings monthly - Transfusion Team meeting, Haematology and Blood Transfusion Quality meeting, Haematology Specialty group meeting if needed.
Attend quarterly - Trust Transfusion meetings, NHSBT User Group.
Using the Quality Management System ensuring quality requirements for the laboratory are met for MHRA and UKAS and being present at any inspections and reviewing and addressing any findings raised.
Validation of analysers and IT systems ensuring new processes and equipment are fit for purpose and all documentation is completed in line with ISO15189:2022.
Training all grades of staff within Blood Transfusion.
Management of Blood Stocks.
Job responsibilities
Ensuring staff are trained and competency assessed and following SOPs in all procedures, and that the QMS is updated with all current signed competency and training information for staff.
Management of Quality Control, IQC, interlab comparisons, submitting EQA results and reviewing reports and feeding back to Monthly Quality meeting and Consultant Haematologists if necessary.
Reporting and investigating incidents, ensuring root cause is addressed, speaking to staff and retraining if necessary, ensuring all paperwork such as staff reflections, incident reports and CAPAs are completed.
Making sure staff complete daily all outstanding tasks and testing to the required standard.
Blood Stocks must be managed across all sites; Darlington lab (DMH) manages the day-to-day blood stock at Bishop Auckland Hospital (BAH) which is a remote site. Both DMH and BAH have Haemobanks and remote issue is possible. Bloodtrack is in use at all sites for blood stock management and issue.
Implementing new processes, ensuring all validation, change control, training, and SOP documentation is complete, regularly reviewed, and distributed to the correct staff groups. Our Blood Transfusion analysers and LIMS are due to be refreshed soon. BloodTrack is in place for collection (combination of haemobanks and Kiosks) and expanding to include BloodTrack Tx for sample labelling and administration. Together with the other Blood Transfusion seniors, you must be able to plan the changes, write test scripts, ensure UAT is completed, perform risk assessments, complete change control documentation, roll out training for staff, document and sign off.
Shift rota and annual leave planning may be necessary.

* Appropriate relevant experience in a similar or larger establishment working as BMS Band 6 or above in a supervisory role in Blood Transfusion or Haematology and Blood Transfusion.

* IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma in Transfusion Science OR an IBMS accredited MSc in Transfusion Science or Biomedical Science with a Transfusion Specialism of at least 45 Level 7 CATS points OR FIBMS by examination (special exam) in Blood transfusion or Transfusion Science.
