Deputy Lead Biomedical Scientist - Cellular Pathology

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a substantive (37.5 hours per week) Band 8a post for a Deputy Biomedical Scientist/Lab Manager in Cellular Pathology to join the dynamic and evolving team within the Cellular Pathology department at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust.
The successful applicant will be a well-motivated enthusiastic HCPC registered BMS and must have the IBMS/MSc in Cellular Pathology.
The department is IBMS approved for training and has UKAS accreditation to ISO 15189.
Main duties of the job
The post holder is in charge of the day-to-day management of the Cellular Pathology Laboratory. The post holder will play a significant part in overseeing and supervising the clinical and technical training of all graduate Biomedical Scientists, support workers, Specialist Registrars, and Medical students within the department. The post holder acts as the departmental Training Officer, facilitating staff rotation through all sections to ensure competency, overseeing training of junior medical staff and medical students.
Job responsibilities
* The post holder is in charge of the day-to-day management of the Cellular Pathology Laboratory.
* Coordinating the range of technical and clerical tasks required to process a specimen within the Cellular Pathology department.
* Designing, implementing, and ensuring adherence to systems to comply with quality, audit, inspections, and regulatory frameworks (UKAS, Human Tissue Authority (HTA), and Health and Safety).
* Stock control and assessment of equipment needs and maintenance.
* Supervision and training of biomedical scientists and MLAs.
* Responsible for the dissection of specimens in Royal College of Pathologists Group A to C and selected complex dissections of specimens in Groups D and E.
* Act as systems administrator for departmental pathology computer system.
Qualifications and training
* State Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
* BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science or equivalent.
* MSc approved by the Institute of Biomedical Sciences in Biomedical Science or equivalent and/or Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences (Cellular Pathology) or IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma (Cellular Pathology).
* Proven relevant post-registration experience in a Cellular Pathology laboratory.
* Recent Cellular Pathology experience in an NHS laboratory.
Knowledge and experience
* Minimum of 5 years' experience at a senior level within an NHS laboratory.
* Experience of a computerised Pathology System.
* Experience with Quality Assurance & Laboratory Accreditation to ISO 15189.
* Highly Specialist knowledge of own discipline-theory and practical.
* Experience of UKAS accreditation and assessments.
* Experience with EPIC / Beaker (EPR / LIMs).
* Experience of Quality Management Systems such as Q-Pulse.
Physical skills
* Good hand-eye coordination required for manual techniques/handling of delicate precision equipment and preparation of reagents.
* Manual dexterity for performance of dissection and microtomy.
