Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is a provider of specialist health care and has a presence in community outreach sites. Our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients’ homes by holding local clinics at various locations. The Trust also provides inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs.

This is an amazing opportunity for a well-organised, enthusiastic and self-motivated Pharmacist or Trainee Pharmacist (qualifying summer 2025). We will provide training in all areas of paediatrics; no past experience is required. We welcome applicants from the community sector with no previous hospital experience.
Recruiting for 3 full-time positions.
Main duties of the job
* Provide a paediatric clinical pharmacy service to medical and surgical wards including the neonatal unit.
* Provide professional and clinical supervision in the dispensary.
* Support/assist in the provision of an aseptic dispensing and medicines information service.
* Advise medical and nursing staff on medicine-related issues and provide an out-of-hours on-call service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
* Provide a paediatric clinical pharmacy service to wards and departments in accordance with department procedures.
* Patient/parent/carer counselling.
* Prioritise clinical patient drug review and maintain patient profiles.
* Contact with prescribers and other healthcare professionals to discuss the most appropriate drug therapy.
* Document information in patients’ notes and amend prescriptions where appropriate.
* Provide tutorials and training to nursing staff.
* Provide clinical advice at ward rounds.
* Interpret and work to a variety of local and national policies/guidelines.
* Liaise with Near Patient Pharmacy technicians to ensure a seamless and rapid patient discharge.
* Liaise with ward pharmacy technicians over ward medicine requirements.
* Provide advice on therapeutic drug monitoring and appropriate doses for individual patients.
* Review and dispense outpatient and inpatient prescriptions for appropriateness and safety.
* Identify and report adverse drug reactions to the prescriber.
* Ensure compliance with Code of Ethics, Medicines Act and regulations.
* Dispense, check and record clinical trials and restricted use medication.
* Check the work of pharmacy students, technicians and assistants before final release of prescriptions.
* Assist in maintaining safe systems for the control and storage of drugs.
* Ensure safe and accurate preparation and dispensing of extemporaneous products.
* Assist in the provision of an aseptic dispensing service.
* Provide professional supervision of the CIVAS service.
* Assist in the provision of a medicines information service.
* Provide an out-of-hours paediatric on-call pharmacy service.
* Participate in rotas to provide pharmacy services at weekends and bank holidays.
* Review prescribing trends and advise on cost-effective use of drugs.
* Contribute towards the development of clinical guidelines.
* Act as a mentor for pre-registration students and pharmacy technicians.
* Participate in clinical forums and provide tutorials/presentations.
* Assist in the release of cytotoxic drugs out of hours/weekends.
* Undertake continuing professional development.
* Participate in clinical audit or research if appropriate.
* Participate in flexible hours of working.
Person specification
Education and Training
* Masters Degree in pharmacy (or equivalent).
* 1-year Pre-registration training and experience.
* Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
Experience
* Newly qualified or one-year post-qualification.
* Previous hospital experience.
* Previous paediatric experience.
Knowledge and Skills
* Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
* Good organisational skills and ability to prioritise work.
* Ability to negotiate a positive outcome.
* Works well both individually and in a team.
* Self-motivating and able to motivate others.
